Changing sex differences in undernutrition of African children: findings from Demographic and Health Surveys

Michel Garenne et al.

Summary: The study found that in sub-Saharan Africa, boys are more susceptible to undernutrition, and the sex ratios of prevalence varied with age and mortality rates. Comparisons with other anthropometric reference sets yielded slightly different results, with potential explanations discussed for these patterns.

Differences in maternal and early child nutritional status by offspring sex in lowland Nepal

Naomi M. Saville et al.

Summary: Boys tend to grow faster than girls in early life, but they may be more susceptible to undernutrition. Mothers' nutritional status and dietary intake do not necessarily differ based on the sex of their offspring, but poor maternal nutrition may compromise boys' growth more than girls. Larger sex differences in children's size in the food supplementation study arm suggest that food restriction in pregnancy may limit fetal growth of boys more than girls.

A cross-sectional study of prevalence and risk factors for stunting among under-fives attending acute malnutrition treatment programmes in north-western Nigeria: Should these programmes be adapted to also manage stunting?

Abdulazeez Imam et al.

Summary: The prevalence of stunted severely wasted children is high in CMAM programmes in north-western Nigeria, with factors such as age, gender, and rural clinic attendance contributing to the increased risk of stunting. Policymakers need to adapt treatment programmes to address stunting in addition to severe wasting, considering practical realities such as available expertise and limited resources.

Factors associated with concurrent wasting and stunting among children 6-59 months in Karamoja, Uganda

Gloria Adobea Odei Obeng-Amoako et al.

Summary: Children with concurrent wasting and stunting face a similar risk of death as those with severe wasting. While wasting and stunting have similar causal pathways, limited evidence exists on the correlates of concurrent wasting and stunting. Factors such as gender, age, presence of certain illnesses, maternal health, and household livestock ownership are associated with concurrent wasting and stunting in children. Prevention strategies for concurrent wasting and stunting should be pragmatic and multifaceted.

Characteristics that modify the effect of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplementation on child growth: an individual participant data meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Kathryn G. Dewey et al.

Summary: Meta-analysis showed that providing small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNSs) can reduce child stunting and wasting, especially among specific subgroups such as girls, later-born children, and those living in households with improved sanitation.

Growth patterns by sex and age among under-5 children from 87 low-income and middle-income countries

Janaina Calu Costa et al.

Summary: The study found that male disadvantage in linear growth is most prominent in the first years of life, but by age 4, the sex gap has largely disappeared. Additionally, male disadvantage decreases with increasing national income levels across all age groups, with no significant differences noted in wealthier countries for 4-year-old children.
