Crystallins as Important Pathogenic Targets for Accumulation of Structural Damages Resulting in Protein Aggregation and Cataract Development: Introduction to This Special Issue of Biochemistry (Moscow)

Reza Yousefi

Summary: This issue of Biochemistry (Moscow) focuses on the role of protein misfolding and aggregation in cataract development. Various factors, including genetic mutations and chemical compounds, can disrupt the proper folding of eye lens proteins, leading to the formation of light-scattering aggregates and increasing the risk of cataract. Diabetes mellitus, characterized by oxidative stress and the production of reactive compounds, can accelerate the unfolding and aggregation of lens proteins. The journal issue contains reviews and research articles discussing the detrimental effects of mutations and reactive metabolites on lens crystallin proteins, as well as the protective mechanisms against physical and chemical factors.
