Should knee extension strength testing be implemented as a screening test for identifying probable and confirmed sarcopenia in older T2DM patients?

Ofer Kis et al.

Summary: Using cutoff points for knee extension strength (KES) measured by a simple hand-held dynamometer can assist in the identification of probable and confirmed sarcopenia in older type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This is particularly useful for patients with high body mass index (BMI) but normal appendicular skeletal mass index (ASMI) and handgrip strength (HGS), as it may reduce false positive sarcopenia screening results.

Additive Effect of Sarcopenia and Anemia on the 10-Year Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Feihui Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between sarcopenia, anemia, and 10-year cardiovascular disease risk in diabetic patients. The results showed that sarcopenia is associated with an increased risk of anemia and the presence of both conditions further increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients. Additionally, a reduction in muscle mass independently predicts an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in this population.

A Narrative Review on Sarcopenia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Prevalence and Associated Factors

Anna Izzo et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health burden for the elderly, affecting approximately 25% of those over 65 years old. Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, has been identified as a new complication in elderly individuals with T2DM. It is important for researchers and clinicians to understand the risk factors and associations of sarcopenia in T2DM patients in order to provide appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Agreement of bioelectrical resistance, reactance, and phase angle values from supine and standing bioimpedance analyzers

Jacob R. Dellinger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the agreement of raw bioelectrical variables obtained from three bioimpedance analyzers. Significant differences were observed between the devices when analyzing the total sample and males, while better agreement was found when analyzing females. Resistance and phase angle were found to be equivalent between the supine devices (BIS, SFBIA), but not with the standing analyzer (MFBIA).

Association of Body Composition with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective Chart Review Study

Chia-Ling Lin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the body composition of individuals with T2DM and found that the prevalence of low muscle mass and sarcopenic obesity increases with age. The overall obesity prevalence was higher when using PBF compared to BMI, even in those with normal BMI. Body weight, BFM, FFM, ASM, and SMI all decreased with age for both men and women. Using BMI to assess obesity underestimates prevalence and overlooks issues with muscle mass and high body fat in individuals with normal BMI.

The Utility of Body Composition Assessment in Nutrition and Clinical Practice: An Overview of Current Methodology

Clifton J. Holmes et al.

Summary: Body composition is crucial for maintaining good general health and longevity, influenced by genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. As individuals age, there is a natural increase in fat mass along with a decline in lean mass, leading to higher risks of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and premature death. Healthcare professionals must have a critical understanding of body composition assessment methods and their strengths and limitations.

Association of Acarbose with Decreased Muscle Mass and Function in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective, Cross-Sectional Study

Lan-lan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study found that patients using acarbose had significantly decreased skeletal muscle index, handgrip strength, and gait speed compared to patients using other glucose-lowering drugs. Even in propensity score matching, patients using acarbose still had lower gait speed and skeletal muscle index compared to their matched patients. The use of acarbose was associated with decreased muscle mass and strength, suggesting that assessment and exercise of muscles should be considered in patients with long-term acarbose treatment.
