A Systematic Review of ASL Perfusion MRI in Mild TBI

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a significant public health concern, and cerebrovascular alterations play a crucial role in the evolution of injury sequelae and brain repair. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is an advanced technique for noninvasive quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF), and this systematic review of ASL research in mTBI patients found evidence of ASL-derived CBF anomalies. However, the synthesis of findings was challenging due to methodological variations and the scarcity of studies with low risk of bias. Larger-scale prospective cohort studies are needed to better understand CBF changes after mTBI and the contribution of individual difference factors.

Current and potential new treatment strategies for creatine deficiency syndromes

Gabriella Fernandes-Pires et al.

Summary: Creatine deficiency syndromes are inherited metabolic disorders that mainly affect the central nervous system. Current treatment strategies can benefit some patients, but for others, the development of novel therapies is necessary for more effective treatment options.

Effects of Creatine Supplementation on Properties of Muscle, Bone, and Brain Function in Older Adults: A Narrative Review

Scott C. Forbes et al.

Summary: Aging is associated with declines in muscle, bone, and brain health, which can be impacted by lifestyle factors such as exercise. Despite the benefits of exercise, a majority of older adults do not meet recommended levels of resistance and aerobic training, highlighting the need to explore other lifestyle interventions for maintaining health in older age.

Guanidinoacetic acid loading for improved location-specific brain creatine

Sergej M. Ostojic

Summary: This study conducted a secondary analysis of previously completed GAA loading trials and found a relatively favorable response rate to short-term GAA loading in healthy young men. The contrasting location-dependent pattern for GAA and creatine to positively affect brain creatine levels may be of significant interest to the scientific community for further research.

Creatine Supplementation and Brain Health

Hamilton Roschel et al.

Summary: There is strong evidence supporting the benefits of creatine supplementation on muscle function and health. Additionally, research suggests potential benefits for brain health, particularly in conditions with brain creatine deficits. More studies are needed to determine the optimal creatine protocol for increasing brain creatine levels and assessing cognitive function.

Creatine Supplementation in Children and Adolescents

Andrew R. Jagim et al.

Summary: Creatine supplementation is popular among both adults and children, with potential therapeutic benefits for neuromuscular and metabolic disorders. Limited studies on adolescent athletes suggest improvements in performance outcomes and no adverse effects associated with supplementation. Further research is needed to determine the extent of physiological benefits in this population.

The Application of Creatine Supplementation in Medical Rehabilitation

Kylie K. Harmon et al.

Summary: Creatine monohydrate has been investigated as a supplemental agent to mitigate muscle mass and function loss in rehabilitation. Although promising, results are inconsistent due to limited and varied clinical studies across different diseases, with factors like disease pathologies, intervention protocols, creatine dosage and patient population affecting the findings. Further research is needed to address gaps in knowledge within medical rehabilitation.
