Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Cardiometabolic Health: An Energy Metabolism Perspective

Manuel Dote-Montero et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the effects of different types of intermittent fasting (IF) on human cardiometabolic health. IF regimens improve body composition, ectopic fat, and classic cardiometabolic risk factors, especially in metabolically unhealthy participants. However, it is still unclear whether IF provides additional cardiometabolic benefits as compared to continuous daily caloric restriction (CR).

Effect of time restricted eating on body weight and fasting glucose in participants with obesity: results of a randomized, controlled, virtual clinical trial

Pamela M. Peeke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of combining time restricted eating (TRE) with a commercial weight management program on body weight and fasting blood glucose in individuals with obesity. Results showed significant improvements in weight and fasting blood glucose in the 14:10 TRE group after 8 weeks, indicating the effectiveness of this approach for weight loss and metabolic health.

Remodeling of the gut microbiome during Ramadan-associated intermittent fasting

Junhong Su et al.

Summary: Intermittent fasting, particularly observed during Ramadan, was found to increase gut microbiome diversity and upregulate specific bacterial families such as Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae. These changes in microbiome composition returned to baseline after cessation of intermittent feeding, and alterations in Lachnospiraceae concentrations were correlated with changes in physiological parameters provoked by intermittent fasting. The study suggests that the upregulation of butyric acid-producing Lachnospiraceae may play a role in the health benefits associated with intermittent fasting.

Fasting alters the gut microbiome reducing blood pressure and body weight in metabolic syndrome patients

Andras Maifeld et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that nutritional modification including fasting can lead to alterations in intestinal microbiota and circulating immune cells, improving blood pressure and body weight in patients with metabolic syndrome. Multiple omics data highlight fasting as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Summary: For individuals with obesity and fatty liver, weight loss through diet can effectively improve liver conditions. This study demonstrates that both low-carb high-fat and the 5:2 diet are effective in treating fatty liver caused by obesity.

Intermittent Energy Restriction, Weight Loss and Cardiometabolic Risk: A Critical Appraisal of Evidence in Humans

Alexia L. Katsarou et al.

Summary: Intermittent energy restriction (IER) has been proposed as an attractive alternative to continuous energy restriction (CER) for the management of obesity and its associated comorbidities. Although it may have beneficial effects on cardiometabolic health, IER is not superior to CER and there are several critical issues/questions that warrant further investigation.
