The differential effects of viewing short-form online culinary videos of fruits and vegetables versus sweet snacks on adolescents' appetites

Yandisa Ngqangashe et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to social media culinary videos can influence adolescents' food-related outcomes, such as food choice behavior, liking of foods, and intentions to eat and prepare foods. The sweet snacks video reduced liking of fruits and vegetables, while the fruits and vegetables video increased intentions to prepare healthy snacks. Further research on prolonged repetitive exposure is needed to understand the full impact of these videos on adolescent appetites.

Viewing personalized video clips recommended by TikTok activates default mode network and ventral tegmental area

Conghui Su et al.

Summary: Cutting-edge recommendation algorithms used by media platforms for personalized content may lead to addiction-like behaviors, with 5.9% of TikTok users showing significant problematic use. Brain activity when viewing personalized videos showed higher activations in DMN sub-components, ventral tegmental area, lateral prefrontal, anterior thalamus, and cerebellum. Stronger coupling between DMN subregions and neural pathways related to auditory and visual processing, as well as the frontoparietal network, suggests how recommendation algorithms can capture users' attention to suggested contents.

Summary: China has experienced significant social, economic, and lifestyle changes since the 1990s, leading to a rise in obesity rates. Despite efforts to tackle obesity, the country still faces challenges in controlling the epidemic and the associated burden on the healthcare system. The Healthy China 2030 national strategy provides an opportunity for China to establish comprehensive national strategies for addressing obesity, but strong commitment and leadership from central and local governments, as well as active participation from all sectors of society, are needed.
