Fossil-Informed Models Reveal a Boreotropical Origin and Divergent Evolutionary Trajectories in the Walnut Family (Juglandaceae)

Qiuyue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geographic diversity formation of the temperate woody plant family Juglandaceae through integrating molecular, morphological, fossil, and environmental data. The results show that Juglandoideae rapidly evolved frost tolerance and diversified at high latitudes during the Miocene, while Engelhardioideae showed temperature conservatism and adapted to increased humidity at low latitudes since the Eocene. The North Atlantic land bridge and Europe played critical roles in linking the floras of East Asia and North America.

A quantitative framework to infer the effect of traits, diversity and environment on dispersal and extinction rates from fossils

Torsten Hauffe et al.

Summary: Speciation, dispersal, and extinction are crucial for understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of biodiversity. However, due to incomplete fossil records, determining the dynamics of these processes and the factors influencing them is challenging. In this study, the dispersal-extinction-sampling (DES) model is expanded to incorporate heterogeneity in fossil sampling, reconstruct diversity trajectories, and link range evolution rates with biological and environmental covariates. The validated framework demonstrates the power of likelihood-based model testing in discerning the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on dispersal and extinction. The study also highlights the influence of trait-dependent models in accurately estimating parameter values.

Joint Phylogenetic Estimation of Geographic Movements and Biome Shifts during the Global Diversification of Viburnum

Michael J. Landis et al.

Summary: The study utilized a comprehensive model to analyze the evolutionary history of the Viburnum clade, indicating that the major lineages evolved during the Eocene, while most extant species originated since the Miocene. Viburnum first radiated in warm, evergreen forests in Asia, with subsequent movements into tropical forests and those experiencing prolonged freezing.

Modeling Phylogenetic Biome Shifts on a Planet with a Past

Michael Landis et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of biomes has changed considerably over time, affecting the opportunities for evolutionary lineages to shift between different biomes. A phylogenetic biome shift model was developed to study how lineages shift between biomes and regions, with results suggesting a warm temperate or tropical origin for a specific plant genus. The model highlights the importance of considering dynamic geographical opportunities in inferring ancestral biomes compatible with Earth's history.

Out of the extratropics: the evolution of the latitudinal diversity gradient of Cenozoic marine plankton

Nussaibah B. Raja et al.

Summary: Based on the study findings, it was revealed that over the past 66 million years, the diversity and dispersal of marine plankton were greatly influenced by large-scale climatic changes during the Cenozoic era. The origination of new species was more likely in the extratropics, while net dispersal was towards the tropics.

CarniFOSS: A database of the body mass of fossil carnivores

Soren Faurby et al.

Summary: Body mass is a crucial determinant in animal ecology and has the potential to be inferred from fossils. However, there is a lack of comprehensive databases for the body mass of extinct species. The CarniFoss database aims to fill this gap by providing body mass data for a large number of extinct carnivorous mammals.

Modelling the tempo and mode of lineage dispersal

Jan Hackel et al.

Summary: Lineage dispersal is a fundamental macroevolutionary process that shapes the distribution of biodiversity. Current modeling methods have advanced in explaining the variation of lineage dispersal over space, time, and phylogenetic branches, aiding in answering fundamental questions about the tempo and mode of lineage dispersal. Methodological improvements guided by a focus on model adequacy will lead to more realistic models that can further answer key questions about lineage dispersal.
