Automated iceberg tracking with a machine learning approach applied to SAR imagery: A Weddell sea case study

Mauro M. Barbat et al.

Summary: Drifting icebergs pose significant hazards for polar navigation and impact the ocean environment. A novel automated iceberg tracking method based on machine learning was proposed in this study, demonstrating the ability to detect and track icebergs in the challenging Antarctic environment. The method revealed prevalent drift patterns, size variability, average disintegration rates, and estimated a total iceberg mass decrease.

Antarctic coastal nanoplankton dynamics revealed by metabarcoding of desalination plant filters: Detection of short-term events and implications for routine monitoring

Matteo Cecchetto et al.

Summary: This study utilized DNA metabarcoding to investigate the seasonal dynamics of Antarctic coastal nanoplankton communities, revealing detailed intra-annual changes and the importance of extreme events. By combining cost-effective sampling and molecular techniques, this method may offer a viable solution for long-term monitoring programs focusing on Antarctic coastal communities.

ALMI-A Generic Active Learning System for Computational Object Classification in Marine Observation Images

Torben Moeller et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in the deployment of cabled Fixed Underwater Observatories (FUOs) equipped with digital cameras recording high-resolution digital image time series. A new strategy combining active learning procedure and deep learning feature representations has been proposed for machine learning-based observatory image interpretation, showing promising results on two different data sets. The proposed ALMI method achieves high classification accuracy with fewer training samples compared to the reference method.

Latitudinal changes in the trophic structure of benthic coastal food webs along the Antarctic Peninsula

Luis Cardona et al.

Summary: Stable isotopes of C and N were used to assess the impact of sea ice season duration on Antarctic coastal benthic food webs. The study found a non-monotonic relationship between latitude and food web structure, with highly productive phytoplankton blooms potentially playing a significant role in shaping the benthic marine food web structure. This suggests that factors such as summer phytoplankton productivity may be as important as sea ice season duration in influencing food web dynamics.

IoU-uniform R-CNN: Breaking through the limitations of RPN

Li Zhu et al.

Summary: Region Proposal Network (RPN) is crucial in two-stage object detectors for generating object proposals and addressing foreground-background class imbalance during training. However, limitations such as IoU distribution imbalance and inadequate training samples generated by RPN have not fully exploited the detector's potential. To overcome these limitations, a simple but effective method called IoU-Uniform R-CNN is proposed to generate training samples with uniform IoU distribution, improving detection performance and compatibility with various object detection architectures.
