Low residual stress C/C composite-titanium alloy joints brazed by foam interlayer

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: The introduction of metallic foam as an interlayer improves the performance of brazed joints by achieving a more uniform bonding interface, reducing residual stress, and enhancing mechanical properties. Finite element method calculations show a decrease in residual stress from 293 MPa to 228 MPa, indicating an improvement in the mechanical properties of the brazed joints.

Summary: The study presents an alternative fastening solution using innovative CF/PEEK rivets, which demonstrate higher shear and tensile strength compared to traditional titanium fasteners. CF/PEEK rivets adapt to different hole dimensions, showing no differentiated mechanical behavior regardless of the hole diameter investigated.

A simple and effective resin pre-coating treatment on grinded, acid pickled and anodised substrates for stronger adhesive bonding between Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and CFRP

Yunsen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of different surface treatments for adhesive bonding between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and titanium alloy. Acid pickling, grinding, anodising treatments, and resin pre-coating (RPC) were employed. The results showed that grinding and anodised specimens had higher bond strengths than acid pickled specimens. RPC treatment significantly increased bond strengths, especially on rough surfaces. The combination of NaOH anodising and RPC treatment yielded the highest bond strength and changed the failure mode.

Tensile properties analysis of CFRP-titanium plate multi-bolt hybrid joints

Yanping Zheng et al.

Summary: The tensile properties of hybrid bonded/bolted joints between CFRP laminate and titanium alloy plate were investigated. A prediction model was established based on CDM theory and CZM, which was validated by experimental and numerical simulation results. The influence of bolt numbers and inter-bolt distance on the bearing capacity of the joints was analyzed, and it was found that double-nail joints and increased inter-bolt distance can effectively improve the performance of the joints.

Effects of laser hybrid interfacial pretreatment on enhancing the carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting composites and TC4 alloy heterogeneous joint

Qi Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, an interfacial hybrid pretreatment of laser cleaning and laser plastic-covered processing was introduced to enhance the strength of carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting composites (CFRTS) and TC4 alloy heterogeneous joint. The laser cleaning effectively removed the epoxy resin on CFRTS surface, while the laser plastic-covered processing produced a thermoplastic layer on TC4 surface. The result showed that mechanical interlocks and chemical bonds were formed at the CFRTS-TC4 interface, leading to an improvement in the CFRTS-TC4 joint strength.

Laser joining of CFRTP to titanium alloy via laser surface texturing

Caiwang Tan et al.

Summary: By laser texturing the TC4 surface, the wettability of molten CFRTP was significantly improved and the shear force of CFRTP/TC4 joints was increased. When the depth of the grid exceeded 100 micrometers, the contact angle increased and led to a gradual decrease in shear force, indicating incomplete filling.

Bio-inspired patterned adhesive single-lap joints for CFRP and titanium

Isaiah Kaiser et al.

Summary: In this study, a bio-inspired patterned adhesive was proposed to enhance composite joint strength by controlling adhesive fracture path and damage initiation location. Hybrid adhesive patterns were shown to increase energy absorption and improve strength performance during failure. This work aims to utilize bio-inspired concepts to design novel patterned adhesive architectures for increased composite joint strength performances.

A new strengthening process of thermoplastic polypropylene reinforced by interlayered activated sizing film-free carbon fiber treated by electron beam irradiation under oxygen-rich nitrogen gas prior to assembly and hot-press

Shodai Kitagawa et al.

Summary: A novel process of activating carbon fiber mats with electron beam irradiation under oxygen-rich nitrogen gas increased bending strength of the composite. Optimal conditions of 0.22 MGy EBI and 2,000 ppm-O-2 improved adhesion sites and bending strength. The presence of oxygen molecules and EBI purified the SFF-CF surface while generating dangling bonds, enhancing adhesion and strength.

Effect of laser texturing on mechanical strength and microstructural properties of hot-pressing joining of carbon fiber reinforced plastic to Ti6Al4V

Yifan Liu et al.

Summary: Using laser textured TC4 surface significantly increases its roughness and wettability, increasing the bonding area with CFRP and enhancing joint shear forces. However, when the texture grid becomes larger, incomplete filling of CFRP leads to a decrease in shear forces. Furthermore, new chemical bonds between Ti and C on laser textured TC4 sheets contribute to further enhancement of tensile-shear forces.

The effect of MWCNTs with different diameters on the interface properties of Ti/CFRP fiber metal laminates

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on enhancing the mechanical properties of Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to a polymer matrix, leading to a significant improvement in interface performance. The van der Waals energy, total energy, and interfacial interaction energy all showed varying trends with different diameters of MWCNTs, eventually stabilizing and indicating an improvement in interface properties. At an average MWCNT diameter of 8 nm, the interface fracture energy increased by nearly 180% compared to the material without MWCNTs.
