The detailed corrosion performance of bioresorbable Mg-0.8Ca alloy in physiological solutions

A. S. Gnedenkov et al.

Summary: The electrochemical behavior of biodegradable magnesium alloy Mg-0.8Ca was evaluated using traditional and local scanning electrochemical methods. The corrosion rates and degradation process of the alloy were determined and the mechanism of bioresorption was proposed. The influence of alloy composition and microstructure on corrosion behavior and the composition of corrosion products were investigated. The study also highlighted the low applicability of uncoated Mg-0.8Ca alloy in implant surgery.

Sirolimus Release from Biodegradable Polymers for Coronary Stent Application: A Review

Wei Xu et al.

Summary: Drug-eluting stents (DESs) are commonly used for the treatment of coronary artery disease. The evolution of the drug-eluting layer on the stent's surface is crucial for its functionality. Using biodegradable polymers is an attractive approach as it reduces the risk of late thrombosis after stent implantation. Understanding drug-release behavior from these polymers is important for improving the safety and efficacy of stent treatments.

In vivo performance of a rare earth free Mg-Zn-Ca alloy manufactured using twin roll casting for potential applications in the cranial and maxillofacial fixation devices

Matthew S. Dargusch et al.

Summary: A novel twin-roll casting process has been used to fabricate a magnesium alloy containing essential, non-toxic, biodegradable elements such as Ca and Zn. The alloy showed comparable mechanical properties and biocompatibility to other rare earth element containing alloys, and exhibited a tissue healing response that may be more conducive to tissue proliferation and remodelling.

Corrosion Resistance and Biocompatibility of Calcium Phosphate Coatings with a Micro-Nanofibrous Porous Structure on Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys

Yunting Guo et al.

Summary: This study prepared a calcium phosphate coating with a micro-nanofibrous porous structure on the surface of magnesium alloy using a chemical conversion method. The results showed that the coating obtained at 60 degrees Celsius had the densest structure and the best corrosion resistance. Cell viability and morphology experiments confirmed that the calcium phosphate coating exhibited excellent biocompatibility.

A review of the physiological impact of rare earth elements and their uses in biomedical Mg alloys

Weijie Weng et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the biological impact and application of rare-earth elements (REEs) in biodegradable Mg-based biomaterials. Despite the effectiveness of REEs in improving corrosion, mechanical, and manufacturability properties of Mg alloys, their physiological effects are still poorly understood. The review provides guidance for the development of new biomedical alloys and emphasizes areas of concern and unclear knowledge. Key findings include current clinical and preclinical work summary, highlighting Sc as the most promising REE in terms of physiological impact, while caution is advised when considering other REEs as alloying elements.

A Comprehensive Review on Surface Modifications of Biodegradable Magnesium-Based Implant Alloy: Polymer Coatings Opportunities and Challenges

Abbas Saberi et al.

Summary: The development of biodegradable implants using magnesium alloys faces challenges such as fast degradation, hydrogen gas generation, and pH value elevation in body solution. Surface modification is a practical approach to improve corrosion resistance and enhance bone regeneration and cell attachment. Metal coatings, ceramic coatings, and permanent polymers have been shown to minimize degradation rates, but bioabsorbable polymers are generally preferred for their desired biocompatibility.
