Technological connections in the development of 18th and 19th century Chinese painted enamels

Dana Norris et al.

Summary: This study nondestructively analyzed enamel fragments from Chinese painted enamel objects dating to the 18th and early 19th century. The results show that Chinese painted enamels combine Chinese and European technology to create a new and distinct art form.

Non-Invasive Raman Analysis of 18th Century Chinese Export/Armorial Overglazed Porcelain: Identification of the Different Enameling Techniques

Philippe Colomban et al.

Summary: Six rare porcelains from the Qing Dynasty were analyzed using non-invasive Raman microspectrometry. The study found that European ingredients and/or recipes were used, indicating China's role as both an importer of European know-how and an exporter of enameled products with imported technologies during the 18th century. Different recipes or raw materials may be the signature of different workshops.

The Technology Transfer from Europe to China in the 17th-18th Centuries: Non-Invasive On-Site XRF and Raman Analyses of Chinese Qing Dynasty Enameled Masterpieces Made Using European Ingredients/Recipes

Philippe Colomban et al.

Summary: The study of two masterpieces from the Qing Dynasty revealed the technical characteristics and sources of the materials used in their production. The Qianlong ewer used cobalt imported from Europe, while the incense burner utilized Asian cobalt ores, reflecting the exchange of techniques during that period.

New Probe for Porcelain Glazes by Luminescence at Near-Infrared Excitation

Shoutaro Kamura et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying a wide range of materials, including porcelain. This study found that the broad feature observed in Raman spectra of glazed porcelains originates from luminescence around 880 nm, not from Raman scattering. This discovery provides important insights into the glass formation process of the glaze.

Summary: The article discusses the history of cobalt as a coloring agent for glass, glaze, and enamel, as well as the different forms of cobalt and its relationship with geological deposits and associated elements. It also highlights the importance of analytical tools and better understanding of cobalt ores.
