Durability Performance of Self-Compacting Concrete Containing Crumb Rubber, Fly Ash and Calcium Carbide Waste

Sylvia E. Kelechi et al.

Summary: Waste tire disposal is an environmental threat, but crumb rubber (CR) made from waste tires can be used as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in concrete. This study explores the durability properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing CR modified with fly ash and calcium carbide waste (CCW), and finds that the use of fly ash and CCW can enhance the resistance of SCC to acid and salt, but reduce its resistance to high temperature.

Durability and microstructure of eco-efficient ultra-high-performance concrete

Ahmed M. Tahwia et al.

Summary: The study found that using fly ash (FA) as a high percentage replacement for cement has a positive effect on enhancing the performance of UHPC, with higher compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. However, for the use of CEM III or GBFS, the attack period, sulfate concentration, or replacement percentage need to be reduced to maintain the ultra-high performance of the concrete.

Texture, morphology and strength performance of self-compacting alkali-activated concrete: Role of fly ash as GBFS replacement

Ghasan Fahim Huseien et al.

Summary: The study found that adding an appropriate amount of fly ash can improve the workability of self-compacting alkali-activated concrete, but it may also reduce the compressive strength and flexural strength of the concrete. Therefore, adding fly ash in concrete mixtures is a promising approach for promoting sustainable development in the construction industry.

Suitability of Blending Rice Husk Ash and Calcined Clay for the Production of Self-Compacting Concrete: A Review

Abubakar Muhammad et al.

Summary: Increasing the amount of finer constituents in the mixture can improve self-compacting properties but also increase cement consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Pozzolanic materials like rice husk ash and calcined highly kaolinitic clays are gaining attention as supplementary cementitious materials for self-compacting concrete, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Further research is needed to explore the potential of low-kaolinitic calcined clays and rice husk ash blend in self-compacting concrete for various countries in Africa.

Fresh and mechanical characteristics of roselle fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete incorporating fly ash and metakaolin

R. Prakash et al.

Summary: The incorporation of roselle fibre reduced the workability of self-compacting concrete but improved mechanical characteristics. Higher fibre content resulted in increased compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity. However, a 4% fibre addition may lead to a slight decrease in compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the self-compacting concrete.

Performance of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag and Coal Fly Ash Ternary Portland Cements Exposed to Natural Carbonation

Rosa Abnelia Rivera et al.

Summary: Ternary Portland cements, containing cement replacements such as GBFS, CFA, and clinker, offer environmental advantages by reducing the use of Portland cement clinker and potentially achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Furthermore, GBFS and CFA enhance the mechanical strength and durability of concrete at later ages due to their pozzolanic properties. However, concrete made with ternary cements may exhibit lower carbonation resistance and potential corrosion of reinforcements when the concrete pore solution pH drops.
