Evaluation of complications associated with bifocal bone transport as treatment for either proximal, intermediate or distal femoral defects caused by infection: outcome analysis of 76 patients

Cong Peng et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of bifocal bone transport in the treatment of femoral bone defects caused by infections. The results showed that bifocal bone transport using an external rail fixator had a high satisfactory rate in terms of bone union and limb function recovery. Complications were more severe in distal femoral bone transport, but had the lowest occurrence rate.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the long-term outcomes and complications of Ilizarov bone transport in isolated and comminuted tibial fractures. The study used the Lower Extremities Functional Scale for clinical assessment and recorded complications according to the Dindo classification.

Treatment for postoperative infection of pathological femoral fracture after radiotherapy: two case reports and review of the literature

Minami Matsuhashi et al.

Summary: This study reports two cases of postoperative infection of pathological femoral fracture after radiation therapy for soft tissue tumors. A two-staged operation involving the Masquelet technique, latissimus dorsi flap, and free vascularized fibula graft was effective in controlling the infection and achieving bone union. Both patients had successful outcomes without postoperative complications at the 2-year follow-up.

Management of critical-sized bone defects in the treatment of fracture-related infection: a systematic review and pooled analysis

H. Bezstarosti et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed treatment strategies and outcomes for critical-sized bone defects in fracture-related infection patients. It found that after initial treatment, FRI was cured in 83% of cases, increasing to 94% at the end of each individual study. Recurrence of infection was seen in 8% and amputation in 3%.

Summary: This study identified agricultural work, non-urban living, male gender, smoking, and diabetes as the top five significant risk factors for pin tract infection during bone transport with unilateral external fixation.
