Testosterone therapy masculinizes speech and gender presentation in transgender men

Carolyn R. Hodges-Simeon et al.

Summary: Voice plays a crucial role in gender presentation for transgender men, with many viewing voice change as a critical aspect of successful transition. However, testosterone therapy may not fully masculinize speech, as vocal tract length is often intermediate between cisgender men and women. Additional approaches, such as behavioral therapy or longer hormone therapy duration, may be needed to improve speech transition.

Associations Between Speaking Fundamental Frequency, Vowel Formant Frequencies, and Listener Perceptions of Speaker Gender and Vocal Femininity-Masculinity

Yeptain Leung et al.

Summary: The study found that vowel frequencies have a significant impact on listener perceptions of speaker gender, while perceptions of vocal femininity-masculinity are influenced by multiple factors including various components of vowel frequencies and contrasts between monophthongs at the extremities of the vowel space. Additionally, listener perceptions of speaker gender substantially influence their ratings of vocal femininity-masculinity.
