Atomistic insights into metal hardening

Luis A. Zepeda-Ruiz et al.

Summary: We demonstrated that crystal rotation leads to the staged hardening of metals, while the basic mechanisms of dislocation behavior remain consistent across all stages of metal hardening.

The influence of stacking faults on mechanical behavior of advanced materials

Ruizhe Su et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the influence of stacking faults on mechanical behavior of metallic or ceramic materials becomes prominent when their density increases sharply, sometimes dominating in some cases. This article reviews how nanoscale stacking faults impact the mechanical behavior of these materials, focusing on their formation, interactions with dislocations, and phase transformations during plastic deformation. The aim is to highlight the potential opportunities in using stacking faults to tailor the deformation mechanisms of advanced materials.

Strengthening mechanisms of reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steels: A review

Jin-hua Zhou et al.

Summary: The strengthening mechanisms of RAFM steels include high-angle grain boundaries, subgrain boundaries, M23C6, and MX carbide precipitates, which can enhance high-temperature strength and improve creep properties. Additionally, methods such as oxide dispersion-strengthening and severe plastic deformation can effectively improve the performance of the steel, increasing creep life and overall strength.

Multi-heterostructure and mechanical properties of N-doped FeMnCoCr high entropy alloy

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy of heavy nitrogen-doping in a low-cost metastable FeMnCoCr HEA to produce ultrastrong, tough, and low-cost HEAs. By simple thermomechanical processing, a multiheterostructure was formed, leading to a significant increase in yield strength and uniform elongation of the material. The high-nitrogen duplex alloy design strategy developed here provides a new paradigm for developing high-performance fcc HEAs.

Deformation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation in a CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: In situ straining transmission electron microscopy experiments on the Cantor high-entropy alloy (HEA) of CrMnFeCoNi demonstrate a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation in ultrafine-grained microstructures. The increase of crack-tip dislocation densities due to high lattice friction and grain boundary resistance triggers the transformation. The formation of amorphous nanobridges in the crack wake dissipates strain energies, providing effective toughening mechanisms for HEAs.

Effects of pressure on the generalized stacking fault energy and twinning propensity of face-centered cubic metals

J. X. Yan et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigates the effects of pressure on various aspects of FCC metals, including the GSFE, core structure of dissociated dislocations, twinning propensity, and phase stability. It demonstrates that high pressure can significantly enhance twinning propensity in Ag and the CoCrFeMnNi HEA, while the impact is minimal in Cu. Moreover, the first principles calculation reveals that the sensitivity of twinning propensity in FCC metals to pressure depends on the stacking fault energy and the relative stability of FCC and HCP phases.

Synergy effect of multi-strengthening mechanisms in FeMnCoCrN HEA at cryogenic temperature

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with nitrogen-doped FeMnCoCr composition show excellent mechanical properties at low temperatures, achieving high strength and ductility without compromise. The microstructural evolution, including athermal martensitic transformation and mechanical twinning activation, along with the dynamic Hall-Petch effect and transformation induced plasticity, contribute to the ultrahigh tensile strength and ductility of the alloys. The design strategy of adjusting stacking fault energy in interstitial metastable HEAs paves the way for developing high-performance and cost-effective alloys for cryogenic applications.

Orientation-Dependent Mechanical Responses and Plastic Deformation Mechanisms of FeMnCoCrNi High-entropy Alloy: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Hai-Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation mechanisms of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and reveals significant differences in plastic behavior and dislocation slip compared to low-entropy materials. The larger lattice distortion and enhanced dislocation storage capacity in HEAs contribute to their lower critical stress for dislocation nucleation and elastic-plastic transition. Different deformation mechanisms are activated in HEAs with various initial orientations, providing valuable insights for both theoretical understanding and practical applications.
