Material properties and applications of mechanically interlocked polymers

Laura F. Hart et al.

Summary: Mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) incorporate mechanical bonds, allowing for high degrees of conformational freedom and mobility of components, resulting in unique material properties. Polyrotaxanes and polycatenanes, two common types of MIPs, exhibit close relationships between their structures and properties.

A Mortise-and-Tenon Joint Inspired Mechanically Interlocked Network

Dong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study introduces a mechanically interlocked network (MIN) inspired by mortise-and-tenon joints, which successfully mimics the structure and function of the joint at a molecular level. This novel material exhibits both mechanical adaptivity and structural stability, with decent stiffness, strength, toughness, and deformation recovery capacity.

A catalysis-driven artificial molecular pump

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous chemically fueled information ratchet that continuously pumps crown ether macrocycles from bulk solution onto a molecular axle without the need for further intervention. By tuning the dynamics of the processes, the molecular machine is able to move macrocycles from their lowest energy state in the solution to a higher energy state on the axle, maintaining out-of-equilibrium [n]rotaxanes as long as unreacted fuel is present.

Dynamic covalent self-assembly of mechanically interlocked molecules solely made from peptides

Hendrik Schroeder et al.

Summary: The synthesis strategy of mechanically interlocked peptides (MIPs) solely made from peptides was reported in this study. These MIPs were self-assembled in water, breaking the tradition of MIMs usually being prepared in organic solvents. Detailed NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry characterization revealed that MIPs exhibit rich conformational dynamics reminiscent of protein folding.

Supramolecular polymer-assisted manipulation of triblock copolymers: understanding the relationships between microphase structures and mechanical properties

Zhexian Shentu et al.

Summary: This study reports two triblock copolymers in ABA and BAB forms, with their hard domains composed of crown ether-based supramolecular polymers. The ABA copolymer features a tight network with a regularly distributed hard domain, while the BAB copolymer shows a hierarchical structure with soft, hard, and secondary hard domains, resulting in a relatively tough network. This work represents progress in modifying the phase structures of block copolymers and could contribute to the development of block copolymers with emergent properties.
