An analysis of usability evaluation practices and contexts of use in wearable robotics

Jan Thomas Meyer et al.

Summary: User-centered design approaches have gained attention in tackling the technology acceptance issues of wearable robotic devices. However, dedicated usability evaluation studies are scarce and clear evaluation guidelines are missing. This study identified functionality, ease of use, and performance as the most evaluated usability attributes and provided evaluation recommendations to foster user-centered design and usability evaluation in the wearable robotics field.

Control of Spinal Motoneurons by Feedback From a Non-Invasive Real-Time Interface

Deren Y. Barsakcioglu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a non-invasive, real-time neural interface that can decode the activity of spinal motoneurons, enabling direct interaction with the central nervous system without extensive training. Comparisons with invasive sensors and offline decoding validate the accuracy and stability of the interface. Results demonstrate that the interface can approach the accuracy of natural force control.

A Three-Limb Teleoperated Robotic System with Foot Control for Flexible Endoscopic Surgery

Yanpei Huang et al.

Summary: A novel tele-operation robotic endoscopic system was developed, which allowed one operator to control the endoscope and instruments using their hands and foot simultaneously. In an ex-vivo experiment, participants were able to successfully complete tasks faster and with less mental effort compared to traditional hand control, demonstrating the concept of three-limb tele-operation surgery.

Human performance in three-hands tasks

A. Noccaro et al.

Summary: The research found that in tasks requiring control of three hands, a cooperating dyad outperformed a single user in terms of task score, path efficiency, and motion smoothness. However, as mechanical constraints increased/decreasing the number of simultaneous goals, the relative difference in performance between a dyad and a participant performing trimanual activities decreased, suggesting further potential for supernumerary robotic limbs in this class of scenario.

Integrated Voluntary-Reactive Control of a Human-SuperLimb Hybrid System for Hemiplegic Patient Support

Hanjun Song et al.

Summary: This study presents a new type of wearable robot, named the Hybrid SuperLimb, which combines voluntary human movements and autonomous robotic limb control. A data-driven methodology for bimanual manipulation is developed to support hemiplegic patients' use of a knife and fork. Healthy subject demonstration of knife and fork operation reveals independent voluntary movements and predictable movements, which can be replaced by robot actuators controlled autonomously.

Summary: The study investigated the difference in motor synergies controlling grasping actions between using the Soft Sixth Finger (SSF) and not using the SSF. The results showed that individuals wearing the SSF rapidly adjusted their corticospinal outputs governing imagined grasping actions after a few minutes of training, suggesting that the extra finger may be quickly integrated into the user's body schema.

Summary: A teleoperation task simulating three hands working together was conducted to evaluate human performance during trimanipulation. The study found that using a single subject's hands and foot for trimanipulation was slower than two people cooperating, but showed similar success rate and motion efficiency. Further improvement is needed for the single-user trimanipulation technique.

Supernumerary Robotic Limbs: A Review and Future Outlook

Bo Yang et al.

Summary: Wearable robots, including exoskeletons, prostheses, and Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRLs), have different functions in human augmentation and medical rehabilitation. SRLs provide additional limbs to compensate and strengthen human abilities, assisting users in a novel way without replacing or enhancing existing limbs. The challenge lies in finding a balance between wearability, efficiency, and usability of SRLs.
