Quantification of Biologically and Chemically Bound Phosphorus inActivated Sludge from Full-Scale Plants with Biological P-Removal

Francesca Petriglieri et al.

Summary: Phosphorus exists in different forms in activated sludge, including metal salt precipitates, extracellular polymeric substances, and bound into biomass. This study combines various methods to obtain a comprehensive P mass-balance of activated sludge from EBPR plants. Chemically bound P constitutes the largest proportion of total P, while poly-P is found in bacterial cells.

Active ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea in wastewater treatment systems

Maosheng Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transcriptional abundance and community structure of active AOA and AOB in 14 wastewater treatment systems, revealing that the transcriptional abundances of AOB were higher than those of AOA. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Nitrosomonas europaea and unknown clusters played a dominant role in driving ammonia oxidation. The substrate utilization kinetics of different AOA and AOB species may play a crucial role in shaping their niche differentiation, community composition, and functional activity.

High Diversity and Functional Potential of Undescribed Acidobacteriota in Danish Wastewater Treatment Plants

Jannie Munk Kristensen et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in Danish full-scale activated sludge wastewater treatment plants are rich in Acidobacteriota taxa, which show high metabolic diversity and potential involvement in nitrogen and phosphorus removal and iron reduction. Genome annotation and metabolic reconstruction of Acidobacteriota metagenome-assembled genomes reveal their potential to be polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) with intracellular storage of key compounds.

Mass-immigration determines the assembly of activated sludge microbial communities

Giulia Dottorini et al.

Summary: The study quantified the impact of immigration on bacterial communities in wastewater treatment plants by analyzing the species level in 11 Danish full-scale activated sludge plants. It revealed that the microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants were strongly controlled by the source community and could be quantitatively predicted by considering immigration.

Low Global Diversity of Candidatus Microthrix, a Troublesome Filamentous Organism in Full-Scale WWTPs

Marta Nierychlo et al.

Summary: Candidatus Microthrix is a common bulking filamentous microorganism found in wastewater treatment plants worldwide, with two main species identified: Ca. M. parvicella and the newly proposed Ca. M. subdominans. Both species are commonly found in European municipal WWTPs at low-to-moderate temperatures, with high genetic similarity and potential metabolic differences. This study provides insight into the ecology and physiology of Candidatus Microthrix, highlighting the need for further research in gene expression and control strategies.
