The impact of genetic diversity on gene essentiality within the Escherichia coli species

Francois Rousset et al.

Summary: Bacteria from the same species can vary widely in their gene content, leading to significant differences in gene essentiality between strains and conditions. Genetic determinants for these variations emphasize the importance of epistatic interactions with mobile genetic elements, particularly in triggering the essentiality of persistent genes.

Widespread polycistronic gene expression in green algae

Sean D. Gallaher et al.

Summary: The common belief that polycistronic gene expression is rare in eukaryotes has been challenged by the discovery of hundreds of examples in green algae using the Iso-Seq technology. Various approaches confirmed that multiple proteins are translated from a shared transcript at numerous loci, with transcription starting exclusively at upstream genes and ending after downstream genes. The conservation of this mechanism in different green algae species suggests it may be evolutionarily ancient and biologically significant.

Natural variants suppress mutations in hundreds of essential genes

Leopold Parts et al.

Summary: The consequences of mutations depend on the genetic background in which they occur, with gene function loss being tolerated in some backgrounds but lethal in others. Genetic variation in different yeast strains can suppress fitness defects in certain genes, driven by gain-of-function of a single modifier gene. This suggests that a significant portion of monogenic diseases may be managed by modulating other gene products.
