Beliefs Around Hypoglycemia and Their Impacts on Hypoglycemia Outcomes in Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes and High Risks for Hypoglycemia Despite Using Advanced Diabetes Technologies

Yu Kuei Lin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the frequency of severe and level 2 hypoglycemia in individuals with type 1 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring systems and evaluate the impact of beliefs around hypoglycemia in the development of these conditions. The results showed that despite the use of advanced diabetes technologies, severe and level 2 hypoglycemia still occur, and individuals' beliefs about hypoglycemia may affect the effectiveness of glucose self-management.

Characteristics of adults with type 1 diabetes and treatment-resistant problematic hypoglycaemia: a baseline analysis from the HARPdoc RCT

Peter Jacob et al.

Summary: This study describes the baseline emotional, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics of participants in the HARPdoc trial, which focuses on treatment-resistant problematic hypoglycemia. The findings reveal that the participants had high levels of anxiety and depression, and endorsed unhelpful health beliefs regarding hypoglycemia, with low fear of hypoglycemia.

A Decade of Disparities in Diabetes Technology Use and HbA1c in Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: A Transatlantic Comparison

Summary: This study examined the impact of socioeconomic status on diabetes technology use and glycemic control in youth. The results showed that in the T1DX registry in the United States, participants with lower socioeconomic status had higher levels of glycated hemoglobin, and the gap in HbA(1c) by SES widened over the past decade; whereas in the DPV registry in Germany, the influence of SES on technology use and glycemic control was weaker.

A Real-World Prospective Study of the Safety and Effectiveness of the Loop Open Source Automated Insulin Delivery System

John W. Lum et al.

Summary: The Loop open source system demonstrated improved time-in-range and HbA1c levels in both adults and children with type 1 diabetes, showing its safety and effectiveness over a 6-month period. Reported severe hypoglycemia events also decreased significantly, indicating the potential benefits of using the Loop automated insulin delivery system.

The consequences of hypoglycaemia

Stephanie A. Amiel

Summary: Hypoglycaemia, a common complication of insulin treatment, remains a major concern for people with diabetes, their families, and healthcare professionals. Acute hypoglycaemia triggers a stress response to restore circulating glucose, but the long-term consequences of recurrent episodes are still not fully understood.

Summary: The study showed that closed-loop control (CLC) therapy improved some patient-reported outcomes (PROs) compared to sensor-augmented pump (SAP) therapy, with better outcomes in areas such as improved Hypoglycemia Fear Survey Behavior subscale and confidence in managing hypoglycemia.

Association of Real-time Continuous Glucose Monitoring With Glycemic Control and Acute Metabolic Events Among Patients With Insulin-Treated Diabetes

Andrew J. Karter et al.

Summary: In this retrospective cohort study, insulin-treated patients with diabetes who were selected by physicians for real-time continuous glucose monitoring showed significant improvements in HbA1c and reductions in emergency department visits and hospitalizations for hypoglycemia compared to noninitiators, but there were no significant changes in emergency department visits or hospitalizations for hyperglycemia or for any reason.

Cognitive performance declines in older adults with type 1 diabetes: results from 32 years of follow-up in the DCCT and EDIC Study

Alan M. Jacobson et al.

Summary: In a 32-year follow-up study of individuals with type 1 diabetes, substantial declines in memory and psychomotor and mental efficiency were observed. Higher HbA(1c) levels, more episodes of severe hypoglycemia, and elevated systolic blood pressure were independently associated with greater decrements in mental efficiency over time. Better management of glucose and blood pressure levels could potentially help preserve cognitive function in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Rates of Continuous Glucose Monitor Initiation and Continued Use in Children With Type 1 Diabetes

Charlene W. Lai et al.

Summary: Racial/ethnic disparities exist in continuous glucose monitor (CGM) use among children with type 1 diabetes. The study found that lower CGM use in non-Hispanic Black children was due to lower rates of device initiation and higher rates of discontinuation. Interventions are needed to address both of these barriers in order to reduce disparities in CGM use.
