Elucidation of the Synergistic Effect of Dopants and Vacancies on Promoted Selectivity for CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Zhongjian Li et al.

Summary: A new type of SnO2 nanosheet with simultaneous N dopants and oxygen vacancies (V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS) exhibits high catalytic selectivity for CO2 conversion to formate (HCOO-) through a likely synergistic effect. The low coordination Sn-N moieties, regulated by V-O and N dopants, serve as active sites with optimal electronic and geometric structures. Theoretical calculations show that the reaction free energy of HCOO* protonation is decreased on the V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS, enhancing HCOO- selectivity and inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction.

CO2 Electroreduction to Formate at a Partial Current Density of 930 mA cm-2 with InP Colloidal Quantum Dot Derived Catalysts

Ivan Grigioni et al.

Summary: Formate production through CO2 electroreduction can be achieved at a high activity level using a catalyst synthesized with InP quantum dots. Surface indium metal sites on the catalyst adsorb and reduce CO2 molecules, while sulfur sites cleave water and provide protons, enabling high formate productivity.

Bi-Sn Oxides for Highly Selective CO2 Electroreduction to Formate in a Wide Potential Window

Jianjian Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, highly stable SnO2/Bi2O3 oxide catalysts were obtained by distributing SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface of Bi2O3 sheets. The enhanced stability and high selectivity of the catalyst in CO2 electroreduction reaction were attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between SnO2 and Bi2O3, as well as the improved adsorption of HCOO* intermediate. The SnO2/Bi2O3 catalyst showed excellent performance with a high FEC1 value of 90% and a selectivity of HCOOH above 76% in a wide potential window and a long duration.
