Glucose confers protection to Escherichia coli against contact killing by Vibrio cholerae

Cristian Crisan et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that glucose can protect E. coli commensal strains sensitive to V. cholerae T6SS attacks; cells lacking the cAMP receptor protein (CRP) have better survival against T6SS attacks; glucose-mediated T6SS protection varies with different target and killer cells.

Peptidoglycan-Binding Anchor Is a Pseudomonas aeruginosa OmpA Family Lipoprotein With Importance for Outer Membrane Vesicles, Biofilms, and the Periplasmic Shape

Magnus Paulsson et al.

Summary: The OmpA family proteins play crucial roles in cell morphology, membrane stability, and biofilm and outer membrane vesicle (OMV) formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The lipoprotein from gene locus PA1041 was identified as a potential virulence factor that binds to peptidoglycan (PG) and influences the phenotype of the bacteria, leading to disordered biofilm formation. Mutants lacking this lipoprotein, designated as peptidoglycan-binding anchor (Pba), exhibited severe phenotypic changes, including enlarged periplasm spaces and increased release of OMV.

Host-Like Conditions Are Required for T6SS-Mediated Competition among Vibrio fischeri Light Organ Symbionts

Lauren Speare et al.

Summary: Bacteria employ diverse competitive strategies to enhance fitness and promote their own propagation. Little is known about how symbiotic bacteria modulate competitive mechanisms as they compete for a host niche. Vibrio fischeri, a symbiotic bacterium with marine animals, utilizes a type VI secretion system (T6SS) for interbacterial competition during colonization of the Euprymna scolopes squid light organ. Different strains of V. fischeri exhibit varying response to host-specific cues in the competition process, suggesting evolution of competitive mechanisms in filling distinct niches.
