Loading rate effect on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) behavior of cemented paste backfill (CPB)

Zhanguo Xiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the UCS behavior of 14-day cured CPB samples under five different loading rates, showing that the increase in loading rate strengthens UCS and the correlation between loading rates and UCS fits an exponential function. The loading process can be divided into uniform and non-uniform phases, and loading rates of 0.5 and 1 mm/min result in the smallest standard deviation for axial displacement and strain. The research provides valuable evidence for selecting appropriate loading rates in assessing UCS of CPB samples for laboratory tests.

An experimental system to evaluate impact shear failure of rock discontinuities

Wei Yao et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new experimental methodology to assess the dynamic shear failure process of discontinuities in rocks and other geomaterials using high-speed optical and mechanical measurement techniques. The results show that normal stress has a significant effect on peak shear stress, and the peak shear stress itself is rate dependent.

An experimental and analytical study of rate-dependent shear behaviour of rough joints

Hua Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the shear behavior of rough joints is important in rock engineering, especially under dynamic loadings. This study investigated joint shear behavior at different shear rates and developed a rate-dependent constitutive model. The findings suggest that the shear strength of joints varies with roughness and shear rate, with a proposed viscous joint model showing promise in describing shear stiffness evolution.

Slip behavior of rough rock discontinuity under high velocity impact: Experiments and models

Feili Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental method to simulate slip shear failure along rock discontinuities, conducted by dynamic direct shear experiments using a dynamic shear apparatus combined with a high-speed digital camera. The effects of shear velocity and normal stress on rough rock discontinuities are analyzed, revealing that slip rate is linearly proportional to shear velocity and decreases with increasing normal stress. A dynamic failure criterion is developed considering both surface roughness and dynamic loading, providing a good prediction of the experimental data on the dynamic shear process of rock discontinuities.
