Phylogeography and demographic history of the black kite Milvus migrans, a widespread raptor in Eurasia, Australia and Africa

Natalya G. Andreyenkova et al.

Summary: The black kite is a common raptor species that shows great flexibility in food resources and breeding sites. Research found that populations from Europe, northern Asia, and India have distinct mitochondrial cytochrome b gene haplogroups, while the Australian population separated from the Indian population carries one of the two major Indian haplotypes. Additionally, the yellow-billed kite in Africa differs at the species level from the black kite and contains at least two genetically distant mitochondrial lineages.
