Stabilization of the Elusive Antimony(I) Cation and Its Coordination Complexes with Transition Metals

Vikas Kumar et al.

Summary: Compound 1, stabilized by 5,6-bis(diisopropylphosphino)acenaphthene, exhibited nucleophilic behavior towards coinage metals with the fugitive antimony (I) cation. Synthesized strategically at room temperature from SbCl3, the bis(phosphine), and trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, compound 1 involves a two-electron oxidation of the ligand to form a P-P bonded diphosphonium dication, which is separated to give both products in pure form in moderate yields. Despite its overall positive charge, compound 1 was found to bind to metal centers, forming complexes with Au-I, Ag-I, and Cu-I.

Fluoride anion complexation and transport using a stibonium cation stabilized by an intramolecular P=O → Sb pnictogen bond

Vanessa M. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In this study, a stibonium Lewis acid was synthesized and used to prepare fluorostiborane. The fluorostiborane showed enhanced P=O -> Sb interaction and exhibited significantly higher fluoride anion transport activity in fluoride-containing vesicles compared to traditional antimonium cations.

Reversing Lewis acidity from bismuth to antimony

Deepti Sharma et al.

Summary: Investigations on the boundaries between the neutral and cationic models of (Mesityl)(2)EX (E = Sb, Bi and X = Cl-, OTf-) have demonstrated a reversal of Lewis acidity from bismuth to antimony. The higher efficiency of (Mesityl)(2)SbOTf over (Mesityl)(2)BiOTf in catalytic reduction of phosphine oxides to phosphines is supported by experiments and computations, providing insights for designing new Lewis acids relevant to catalysis.

Distiboranes based on ortho-phenylene backbones as bidentate Lewis acids for fluoride anion chelation

Di You et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of antimony-based bidentate Lewis acids for anion sensing and transport, demonstrating their strong fluoride anion chelating ability. The use of octafluorophenanthrene-9,10-diolate ligand provides advantageous solubility and Lewis acidity properties in the compounds.
