Increasing the Physical Representation of Forest-Snow Processes in Coarse-Resolution Models: Lessons Learned From Upscaling Hyper-Resolution Simulations

Giulia Mazzotti et al.

Summary: Processes shaping forest snow cover evolution vary at small spatial scales, posing a challenge for model developers to represent this variability at larger scales. Using a hyper-resolution forest snow model, it was found that including detailed process-specific canopy descriptors allows for accurate simulation of forest snow cover dynamics at coarse resolutions. Realistic representation of snow-covered fraction is also important even for relatively small grid cells in snowmelt calculations. Ultimately, this study provides recommendations for modeling forest-snow processes in large-scale applications.

CrocO_v1.0: a particle filter to assimilate snowpack observations in a spatialised framework

Bertrand Cluzet et al.

Summary: Monitoring the evolution of snowpack properties in mountainous areas is crucial for avalanche hazard forecasting and water resources management, with limited traditional observation coverage. CrocO is an ensemble data assimilation system that can analyze and smooth snowpack observation data. Feasibility testing shows that assimilating height of snow and reflectance observations in a spatialized context can significantly improve results.

Snow Ensemble Uncertainty Project (SEUP): quantification of snow water equivalent uncertainty across North America via ensemble land surface modeling

Rhae Sung Kim et al.

Summary: The Snow Ensemble Uncertainty Project (SEUP) aims to establish a baseline characterization of snow water equivalent (SWE) uncertainty across North America, with the highest uncertainty observed in mountainous regions, a need for high-resolution observations. The greatest total snow storage (SWS) is found in Tundra regions with considerable uncertainty, emphasizing the need for accurate estimation. In midlatitude boreal forests, large uncertainties in both SWE and SWS indicate a critical area for focused improvements in modeled snow estimation efforts.
