Influence of pore space heterogeneity on mineral dissolution and permeability evolution investigated using lattice Boltzmann method

Yutian Zhang et al.

Summary: The influence of pore space heterogeneity on mineral dissolution and permeability evolution in porous media was investigated using a numerical approach. It was found that dissolution patterns strongly depended on pore heterogeneity at high Pe and Da numbers. Additionally, six dissolution regimes and four porosity-permeability relationship types were observed in the simulations.

A coupled LBM-DEM method for simulating the multiphase fluid-solid interaction problem

Fei Jiang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical model for simulating the solid-liquid-gas three-phase flow in unconsolidated particle layers is developed. The model utilizes the discrete element method (DEM) and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to propose a multiphase fluid-solid two-way coupling algorithm. The method is applied to simulate the upward migration of leaked gas bubbles through a brine-filled sediment column at the seafloor and investigate the influences of leak flow rate and interfacial tension on bubble rising behavior. The results indicate three different flow regimes, and the proposed numerical method accurately characterizes various multiphase interaction mechanisms.

Investigation of viscous coupling effects in three-phase flow by lattice Boltzmann direct simulation and machine learning technique

Fei Jiang et al.

Summary: The lattice Boltzmann method is used to study the viscous coupling effects in three-phase flows at pore scale. A parametric modification factor for conventional conductance model is proposed to estimate the viscous coupling effect, and machine learning technique is introduced to predict multi-phase permeability. Such data-driven approach can be extended to develop a more sophisticated pore network model for better prediction of transport properties considering viscous coupling effects.

Droplet breakup of a high-viscosity-ratio system in a nonuniform temperature field under laser irradiation

Gea Fardias Mu'min et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of viscosity ratio changes on dispersion progress in immiscible fluids through experimental and numerical studies. The experiment used infrared laser radiation to modify the viscosity ratio of the fluid, causing significant deformation and even breakup of the droplet phase. Numerical simulations revealed that droplet size significantly influences heat absorption and temperature distribution within the system.
