On the turbulence dynamics induced by a surrogate seagrass canopy

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the distinct turbulence dynamics and transport modulated by a common seagrass species. The results showed that the flexible seagrass induced vortex shedding from the blade tips, unlike the rigid seagrass. The spatial and temporal characteristics of coherent flow structures revealed that Kelvin-Helmholtz-type vortices were the dominant flow structures associated with the waving motion of the seagrass.

Modelling of flexible aquatic plants from silicone syntactic foams

Tomographic PIV investigation of vortex shedding topology for a cantilevered circular cylinder

Summary: This study investigates the wake of a finite wall-mounted circular cylinder, revealing the relationship between periodically shed vortices and the quadrupole structure in the wake. The influence of H/D on the development of the quadrupole is characterized, showing that it emerges as an imprint of shed full-loop structures. The results reconcile mean and instantaneous interpretations satisfying the solenoidal condition on the vorticity field.

A simple-wave damping model for flexible marsh plants

Summary: A model was developed to predict wave damping within a marsh based on a simple representation of the wave-induced drag on an individual, flexible marsh plant. The drag force on the leaves and the stem was represented separately using a scaling law developed for an isolated plant element, and a sheltering coefficient was applied to account for drag reduction on the leaves due to the interaction among the leaves and stem. The wave damping model was validated against laboratory experiments and compared to field measurements of wave dissipation.

Flow Past Mound-Bearing Impact Craters: An Experimental Study

Summary: The experimental investigation into flow produced by mound-bearing impact craters revealed structural complexity within the idealized crater compared to its moundless counterpart. The study highlighted regions of minimal and elevated turbulent stresses, and revealed a complex interaction between shear layers present at different parts of the crater. The results have implications for mass and momentum exchange within and outside the crater, as well as sediment transport processes. The experiments with the Gale Crater model showed both similarities with and differences from the primary flow features found for the idealized model.
