Effect of the Substrate to Inoculum Ratios on the Kinetics of Biogas Production during the Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste

Aakash Khadka et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of varying substrate to inoculum ratios on biogas production during anaerobic digestion of simulated food waste. The results show that the substrate to inoculum ratio has a significant impact on biogas production, with the ratio of 1 showing the highest production rate and the ratio of 6 showing the lowest. The maximum predicted biogas yields are 668.65 NmL/gVS and 653.17 NmL/gVS according to different models. The study also reveals a significant effect of the substrate to inoculum ratio on the kinetics and energy recovery of anaerobic digestion.

Functions of bacteria and archaea participating in the bioconversion of organic waste for methane production

Farrukh Raza Amin et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a widely used technology for treating organic wastes to generate renewable energy in the form of biogas. The effectiveness of AD process relies on the presence of active and healthy microbial communities in the digesters, but the understanding of microbial populations and functions during AD process is still incomplete, limiting the knowledge of its long-term performance.

The effects of C/N (10-25) on the relationship of substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms in inhibited steady-state of anaerobic digestion

Zehui Zheng et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms in the inhibited steady-state by creating a C/N gradient in anaerobic digestion. The results showed that competition among bacteria was high under low C/N conditions, while cooperation among bacteria was high under high C/N conditions. Additionally, the study further elucidated the process of ammonia inhibition and microbiological indicators of the inhibited steady-state.

Impacts of biochar on anaerobic digestion of swine manure: Methanogenesis and antibiotic resistance genes dissemination

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: The addition of biochar significantly increased methane yield during anaerobic digestion of swine manure, while reducing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes. Furthermore, biochar indirectly affected ARGs by altering microbial structure and the integrase gene intI1.

Deeper insights into effect of activated carbon and nano-zero-valent iron addition on acidogenesis and whole anaerobic digestion

Ruming Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of activated carbon (AC) and nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) on anaerobic digestion, finding that they increased acidogenesis and overall methane yield, respectively. Mechanism exploration showed that AC enriched specific bacteria to improve acid production, while nZVI buffered pH and enriched specific bacteria to utilize H2 and formic acid.

Effects of antibiotics on hydrolase activity and structure of microbial community during aerobic co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge

Zhou Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that adding antibiotics during co-composting affects hydrolase activity and microbial community structure, with the 5 mg/kg antibiotic treatment group showing the highest microbial diversity and the 20 mg/kg antibiotic treatment group showing the lowest richness. pH and temperature were identified as the most important environmental factors during co-composting.

Anaerobic co-digester microbiome during food waste valorization reveals Methanosaeta mediated methanogenesis with improved carbohydrate and lipid metabolism

Swapnil M. Patil et al.

Summary: The study found that low food waste loading in anaerobic digesters can increase methane production, while high loading can lead to extended lag phase and incomplete substrate utilization. The degradation rate of LCFAs is influenced by the initial FW loading, with up to 99% degradation rate at 4% FW reactor, while adding 8 to 10% FW substrate inhibits methane production.

Predicting the performance of anaerobic digestion using machine learning algorithms and genomic data

Fei Long et al.

Summary: Modeling anaerobic digestion (AD) is crucial for understanding its dynamics and improving performance. This study evaluated the feasibility of using 6 ML algorithms to predict methane yield using genomic data and operational parameters, finding that a combination of both improved prediction accuracy. Feature importance analysis suggested specific bacterial phyla play key roles in methane yield prediction.
