Microstructure and granulation cycle mechanisms of anammox-HAP coupled granule in the anammox EGSB reactor

Yi Xue et al.

Summary: This study determined the microstructure, chemical composition, and microbial structure of different-sized anammox-HAP coupled granules, showing homogeneous characteristics regardless of size. A granulation cycle mechanism was proposed for the first time, where small granules grow and enlarge to form large granules, which regenerate new small granules through a two-step procedure.

Characteristics and formation mechanism of hollow Anammox granular sludge in low-strength ammonia sewage treatment

Wenqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Hollow Anammox granular sludge is found to be effective in treating low-strength ammonia wastewater, with Candidatus Kuenenia as the dominant bacteria living within extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) shield. The formation of hollow granules involves cavitation and specific Anammox activity.EPS secretion is related to the specific Anammox activity and tryptophan or protein-like components are crucial in EPS formation within the granules.

Key factors governing the performance and microbial community of one-stage partial nitritation and anammox system with bio-carriers and airlift circulation

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: By controlling dissolved oxygen and aeration rate, stable performance can be maintained under oxygen-limiting conditions. The activation of ammonia oxidation bacteria (AOB), dominated anammox bacteria (AMX), suppression of NOB, and control of heterotrophic bacteria (HB) played a major role in achieving long-term stable operation in the biofilms.

A successful start-up of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) coupled mainstream partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) system: A pilot-scale study on in-situ NOB elimination, AnAOB growth kinetics, and mainstream treatment performance

Jiang Wu et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative treatment process that combines AnMBR with a PN/A system for carbon-neutral municipal wastewater treatment. Through a 255-day start-up process, it was demonstrated that the AnMBR-PN/A process effectively eliminates NOB while retaining AOB community in suspended sludge. The mainstream treatment results showed that the TN removal performance meets discharge limits and the AnMBR-PN/A process has potential for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plants.

Hydroxyapatite Formation in a Single-Stage Anammox-Based Batch Treatment System: Reactor Performance, Phosphorus Recovery, and Microbial Community

Albert Magri et al.

Summary: The study shows that simultaneous NH4+-N removal and PO4-P biomineralization can be achieved through the one-stage partial nitritation-anammox process with the addition of external calcium source, forming mineral cores mostly composed of HAP inside the granules. However, the excessive purge of highly mineralized sludge limits microbial activity in the long term, despite the richness of HAP in the densest granules harvested from the bottom of the bioreactor.

Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Distinct growth stages controlled by the interplay of deterministic and stochastic processes in functional anammox biofilms

Robert Niederdorfer et al.

Summary: The study reveals three distinct stages of anammox biofilm development, characterized by a dynamic succession and an interplay of both stochastic and deterministic processes. These growth stages are essential for the growth of anammox bacteria and the formation of a biofilm community structure that supports desired metabolic and functional capacities in anammox biofilm reactors. The improved understanding of anammox-community ecology and biofilm development has practical implications for the start-up, configuration, and optimization of anammox biofilm reactors.

Shenhua Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the biofilm structure, performance, and nitrogen removal pathways of microporous and macroporous carriers from a full-scale partial nitritation/anammox reactor. Microporous carriers had thicker biofilms, higher biomass, and nitrogen removal efficiency due to the integration of denitrifying and anammox bacteria, while macroporous carriers had thinner biofilms, lower microbial richness, but strong network correlation among genera.
