Enhancing anoxic denitrification of low C/N ratio wastewater with novel ZVI composite carriers

Yanping Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, novel zero-valent iron (ZVI) composite carriers were used to enhance the bioactivity and biodiversity of denitrifiers in a suspended carrier biofilm reactor. The use of 3 wt% ZVI composite carriers resulted in higher COD and TN removal efficiencies compared to conventional carriers. The optimized biofilm formation on the ZVI composite carriers allowed for the coexistence of heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrifiers, enabling effective denitrification of wastewater with a low C/N ratio without the need for external organic carbon sources.

Wenxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of AGS-MBR in mitigating membrane fouling and reveals the scouring mechanism of AGS on membrane fouling. The results show that AGS-MBR has a low fouling rate and higher removal of organics and nutrients compared to conventional MBR. Ammonia removal through combined methane oxidation and nitrification-denitrification and the interactions among functional microorganisms

Qin Cao et al.

Summary: The study explored the utilization of methane produced by anaerobic digestion as a carbon source for nitrogenous contaminant removal in wastewater treatment. The results indicated that coupling methane oxidation with nitrate/nitrite denitrification was beneficial in achieving higher ammonia removal rates. Analysis of microbial communities revealed the presence of methanotrophs and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria in the system.

Synergistic biological removal of nitrogen and sulfide from saline mariculture wastewater by halophilic consortia

Jinxiao Pang et al.

Summary: The MSADA process utilizing halophilic marine anammox bacteria (MAB) showed high efficiency in removing nitrogen and sulfide from seawater-based wastewater under the optimum S/N ratio of 0.75. The dominant functional microorganisms were identified as Candidatus Scalindua, Sulfurimonas and Sulfurovum, all of which exhibited excellent salt tolerance. Nitrate reductase activity was higher than nitrite reductase activity in the system, allowing for effective reduction of NO3--N to NO2--N for MAB. This coupled process offers a new perspective for the treatment of seawater-based wastewater.

Performance of a hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) for shortcut nitrification

Youzhao Wang et al.

Summary: By using fixed fiberfill as an auxiliary biofilm carrier in a hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor, membrane fouling can be effectively alleviated. The experiment showed stable NO2- accumulation capacity in the reactor, with nitrogen ammonia efficiency greater than 80%. Microbial community analysis revealed that microorganisms on the fiberfill dominated the reactor, while biomass on the membrane surface was minimal.

Bacterial-algae biofilm enhance MABR adapting a wider COD/N ratios wastewater: Performance and mechanism

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: The study constructed a bacterial-algae biofilm supporting membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABAR), which showed significantly improved total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency compared to MABR, regardless of the COD/N ratio. Nitrification inhibition tests and redundancy analysis revealed that algae assimilation contributed to NH4+-N removal in MABAR and changed the nitrogen removal route, giving MABAR excellent adaptability and impact resistance.

Salinity-driven nitrogen removal and its quantitative molecular mechanisms in artificial tidal wetlands

Manping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nitrogen removal efficiency in tidal flow constructed wetlands (TF CWs) under different salinity conditions. It found that NH4+-N removal rate was higher at lower salinities, and molecular mechanisms involved in nitrogen removal included DNRA, denitrification, anammox, and nitrification processes. Additionally, the abundance of nitrogen functional genes and bacterial phyla in the mesocosms were quantified, shedding light on the quantitative molecular mechanisms for nitrogen removal in TF CWs for saline water treatment.

Summary: The study found that the size of granules has a significant impact on the SND and biological phosphorus removal processes in the AGS system. Selecting granules within the size range of 212 - 1000 μm and avoiding DO values higher than 3 mgO(2)/L can achieve higher nitrogen removal capacity and energy savings.

Summary: The study investigated the operation of an A2O-IFAS system for removing emerging pollutants, particularly pharmaceutical compounds. Results showed that the A2O-IFAS system achieved similar or higher removal efficiency for organic matter and nutrients compared to conventional systems, even with low sludge retention time and mixed liquor suspended solid. The system demonstrated promising removal rates for certain pharmaceutical compounds, indicating its potential as a cost-effective upgrade for wastewater treatment plants.
