Sequential combination of photocatalysis and microalgae technology for promoting the degradation and detoxification of typical antibiotics

Chenguang Li et al.

Summary: Antibiotic contamination is a major environmental concern due to the potential emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes. In this study, the combination of photocatalysis and microalgae technology was demonstrated for efficient removal and reduction of environmental risk posed by three typical antibiotics. The use of g-C3N4 material, synthesized through an easy thermal polymerization process, showed promising results for antibiotic degradation. Photocatalytic products and their degradation pathways were identified, and the introduction of microalgae further promoted the degradation of these products, ultimately reducing their toxicity.

Defect-enhanced activation of carbon nitride/horseradish peroxidase nanohybrids for visible-light-driven photobiocatalytic water purification

Jiyong Bian et al.

Summary: The construction of defect-mediated enzyme-photo nanoarchitectures improved the generation of reactive species, activated horseradish peroxidase, and restrained the denaturation of extracellular enzymes. The synergy between defect engineered polymers and biological molecules significantly increased the oxidation degradation rate of methyl orange in wastewater. This work opens up new possibilities for modulating enzymatic functionality through defect engineering for efficient photobiocatalytic applications.

Comprehensive insights into core microbial assemblages in activated sludge exposed to textile-dyeing wastewater stress

Taixing Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different types of wastewater on the microbial communities in activated sludge, showing that textile-dyeing wastewater reduces the richness and diversity of microbial communities, selectively enriches microbial taxa with aromatic degradation and denitrification potentials, and inhibits the majority of metabolic functions.

Cell Cycle Control of Nanoplastics Internalization in Phytoplankton

Neng Yan et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the cell cycle plays a crucial role in the bioaccumulation and internalization of nanoparticles, with different cell cycle stages showing varying characteristics in NP accumulation. Factors such as clathrin-mediated endocytosis capacity, algal cell membrane permeability, and exopolymer substance (EPS) thickness are identified as key determinants in NP bioaccumulation during the cell cycle.

Effects of zero valent iron on nitrate removal in anaerobic bioreactor with various carbon-to-nitrate ratios: Bio-electrochemical properties, energy regulation strategies and biological response mechanisms

Guoxiang You et al.

Summary: The study found that ZVI-supported biological denitrification can significantly improve removal efficiency at lower C/N ratios, with increased microbial electron activity and the presence of iron oxides on ZVI aiding in electron transfer. However, at higher C/N ratios, rapid reactions between bioaccumulated NO2- and Fe2+ may reduce nitrogen reduction capacity.

Engineering Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 for mevalonate production from lignin-derived aromatic compounds

Erika Arvay et al.

Summary: Utilization of lignin as a renewable resource is limited by its complex structure and heterogenous composition. Biological valorization of lignin presents advantages over traditional chemical processing, but faces limitations due to lack of relevant metabolic networks and low tolerance to degradation products in traditional engineered model organisms.
