Multiprocess catalyzed Cu-EDTA decomplexation by non-thermal plasma coupled with Fe/C microelectrolysis: Reaction process and mechanisms

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: Through the novel strategy of plasma + iron, there were distinct synergistic effects on Cu-EDTA decomplexation, resulting in improved efficiency and energy efficiency compared to the single plasma system. Iron powder accelerated the decomposition of H2O2 and formation of center dot OH, mitigating the negative effects of radical quenchers. Co-precipitation with polymeric iron further promoted the removal of released Cu ions, leading to the identification of various organic compounds as byproducts of effective Cu-EDTA decomplexation.

Molecular insights into formation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts from algal organic matter in UV-LEDs/chlorine process based on FT-ICR analysis

Yuwei Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that more nitrogen-containing compounds were generated after UV-LEDs/chlorine process, leading to a larger formation of N-DBPs. Compounds such as lignin, proteins, and amino sugars tend to be oxidized in the UV-LEDs/chlorine process. Higher O/C and weighted average double bond equivalence (DBEw) compounds were easier to form N-DBPs, including dichloroacetonitrile and trichloronitromethane.

DBP formation and toxicity alteration during UV/chlorine treatment of wastewater and the effects of ammonia and bromide

Zhechao Hua et al.

Summary: UV/chlorine treatment is efficient for the removal of micropollutants, but can lead to increased formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and toxicity alteration. This study investigated effluent organic matter characterization, DBP formation, and toxicity changes after UV/chlorine treatment of wastewater, with a particular focus on the impact of ammonia and bromide. The results showed that UV/chlorine treatment increased the formation of certain DBPs, while post-chlorination further increased the toxicity. However, the acute toxicity to Vibrio fischeri and genotoxicity determined by the umu test decreased after UV/chlorine treatment. Additional ammonia decreased the formation of DBPs, but increased genotoxicity. The addition of bromide dramatically increased brominated DBP formation and overall toxicity, but also reduced acute toxicity and genotoxicity.

Unveiling the transformation of dissolved organic matter during ozonation of municipal secondary effluent based on FT-ICR-MS and spectral analysis

Bingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) during ozonation of real effluents using advanced spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that as ozone dosage increased, the relative abundance of O8-19 species gradually increased in the ozonated samples, while an opposite trend was observed for O5-7S1 species. The study also identified key reactions and compounds involved in the ozonation process, shedding light on the potential for improving water reclamation through ozonation.

Summary: The study explores a method of regulating carbon flow in the cultivation process of Microcystis through nitrogen deprivation strategy to efficiently convert its biomass into biofuel feedstock. Proteomic analysis proves highly efficient feedstock production can be achieved and a novel method is developed to convert natural Microcystis biomass into carbohydrate-rich feedstock with ethanol production. This technology provides a cost-effective solution for sustainable green energy production.

Insights into the underlying mechanisms for integrated inactivation of A. spiroides and depression of disinfection byproducts by plasma oxidation

Ruigang Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the potential mechanisms for the effective inactivation of A. spiroides and inhibition of the following formation of the DBPs. Transcriptomic analysis and EEM-PARAFAC analysis demonstrated the impact of reactive oxidative species on A. spiroides and AOM, which significantly inhibited the formation potentials of DBPs.

Organic chloramines formation from algal organic matters: Insights from Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

Da Sheng et al.

Summary: The release of algal organic matter poses threats to drinking water safety due to the formation of organic chloramines during chlorination. Algal organic matter, particularly the hydrophilic and high molecular weight fractions containing proteins, tends to generate significant organic chloramines. The molecular composition of algal organic matter, mainly proteins/peptides, plays a crucial role in organic chloramine formation, and appropriate treatment processes are necessary for effective removal of these precursors.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.

Disinfection by-product (DBP) research in China: Are we on the track?

Huiyu Dong et al.

Summary: China has made significant achievements in research on disinfection by-products (DBP), including the discovery of known DBPs in Chinese drinking water, enhanced removal of DBP precursors in water treatment processes, optimization of disinfection to minimize DBP formation, and identification of unknown DBPs in drinking water. Despite covering the entire formation process of DBPs, there is still a challenge in effectively controlling the drinking water quality risk induced by DBPs. An integrated research framework including chemistry, toxicology, engineering, and epidemiology is crucial in addressing this challenge.

Molecular characterization of transformation and halogenation of natural organic matter during the UV/chlorine AOP using FT-ICR mass spectrometry

Xiaoxue Ruan et al.

Summary: UV/chlorine process is effective in removing micro-pollutants but may lead to NOM transformation and DBPs formation, with ClO, Cl, and HO promoting NOM transformation and causing increased formation of Cl-DBPs. UV/chlorine AOP generated more CHON-containing compounds and higher CHOCl compounds compared to dark chlorination, with different chlorine substitution (SR) and addition reactions (AR) occurring based on precursor properties.

Insight into oxidation and adsorption treatment of algae-laden water: Algal organic matter transformation and removal

Qimeng Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that gas phase surface discharge non-thermal plasma combined with anion-exchange processes was effective in degrading and mineralizing intracellular compounds released from algal cells, reducing chlorophyll a concentration, converting organic nitrogen to non-toxic NO3--N rapidly, and ultimately decreasing the concentration of microcystin-LR. Additionally, the treatment process destroyed chromophoric functional groups, transformed aromatic carbon to aliphatic carbon, and exhibited high reusability during multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

Soil Organic Matter Characterization by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FTICR MS): A Critical Review of Sample Preparation, Analysis, and Data Interpretation

William Bahureksa et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of soil organic matter is crucial for soil health, water quality, carbon storage, and greenhouse gas emissions. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) is a powerful analytical technique that helps to understand the speciation and transformation of SOM. This review discusses recent strategies for SOM characterization by FTICR MS, focusing on sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data interpretation. The study also highlights research gaps, biases, and future directions for improving our understanding of organic matter cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.
