Multidrug-resistant bacteria and microbial communities in a river estuary with fragmented suburban waste management

Jia Yee Ho et al.

Summary: This study found differences in physicochemical parameters and bacterial communities between upstream and nearshore locations, with significantly elevated bacterial abundances near wastewater discharge points, including a high amount of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The results suggest that pollution in river estuaries does not linearly increase from inland to coast, but instead varies according to local waste releases and tidal mixing.

Variable fecal source prioritization in recreational waters routinely monitored with viral and bacterial general indicators

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of somatic and F+ coliphage methods as routine surface water quality monitoring tools, and the importance of genetic markers for prioritizing pollution sources. Findings suggest that the selection of general fecal indicators for routine water quality monitoring can influence the interpretation of host-associated genetic marker measurements, leading to prioritization of different pollutant sources for remediation. Differences between Great Lake beach and river sites indicate the need for disparate management practices for each water type.

Faecal microbiota and antibiotic resistance genes in migratory waterbirds with contrasting habitat use

Dayana Jarma et al.

Summary: This study found significant differences in gut microbiome composition and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes among herbivorous and omnivorous migratory waterbirds wintering in South-West Spain. Birds feeding in landfills had higher abundance of resistance genes, potentially serving as reservoirs for antimicrobial resistant bacteria.

Sources of Low Level Human Fecal Markers in Recreational Waters of Two Santa Barbara, CA Beaches: Roles of WWTP Outfalls and Swimmers

Dong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated fecal sources impacting two Santa Barbara recreational beaches, identifying gull and dog feces as probable sources to surf zone waters, while consistently detecting HF183 human fecal markers. It also found that swimmer presence correlated with surf zone HF183 detections, providing new explanations for chronic low-level human markers in recreational beach surf zones.

Summary: This study successfully distinguished the fecal contributions of multiple sources in a rural river using microbial source tracking methods. The combined application of molecular markers and the FEAST program shows promising potential for identifying fecal sources from a more comprehensive perspective.

Metagenomic Sequencing and Quantitative Real-Time PCR for Fecal Pollution Assessment in an Urban Watershed

Kyle D. Brumfield et al.

Summary: The study examined microbial pollution in urban waters before and after a rainfall event using multiple methods, revealing a notable increase in fecal contamination from various sources such as human and animal waste post-rainfall. The addition of qPCR and whole metagenome sequencing provided improved characterization and understanding of microbial pollution sources in ambient waters.
