Differential Bacterial Predation by Free-Living Amoebae May Result in Blooms of Legionella in Drinking Water Systems

Mohamed Shaheen et al.

Summary: The research shows that water-related FLA species preferentially feed on Escherichia coli when the preferred bacterial food-sources are limited, although they also support the intracellular growth of Legionella pneumophila. Moreover, once Legionella pneumophila are intracellular, they inhibit the digestion of co-occurring E. coli within the same trophozoites. These findings suggest that FLA's feeding preference may lead to an increase in Legionella abundance and facilitate the internalization of Legionella into FLA within engineered water systems.

A Methodology for Classifying Root Causes of Outbreaks of Legionnaires' Disease: Deficiencies in Environmental Control and Water Management

Benjamin R. Clopper et al.

Summary: A methodology was piloted to collect and interpret root causes or environmental deficiencies from Legionnaires' disease outbreak investigation reports. The study found that process failures were the majority of identified deficiencies and highlighted the importance of water management programs in preventing and mitigating outbreaks of LD. Emphasizing documentation, verification, validation, and continuous program review steps are crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of WMPs.

A comprehensive evaluation of monochloramine disinfection on water quality, Legionella and other important microorganisms in a hospital

Darren A. Lytle et al.

Summary: Opportunistic pathogens such as Legionella pose a significant public health concern in hospitals. Monitoring of microbiological and water chemistry parameters in hot water at an Ohio hospital before and after the installation of a monochloramine disinfection system over 16 months showed significant reductions in Legionella and nontuberculous Mycobacteria. Overall, the addition of monochloramine led to a decrease in heterotrophic bacteria and a significant decrease in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vermamoeba vermiformis.

Healthcare-Associated Legionella Disease: A Multi-Year Assessment of Exposure Settings in a National Healthcare System in the United States

Meredith Ambrose et al.

Summary: Healthcare facilities are high-risk environments for Legionella disease, but transmission is often overlooked. A study using the LD database at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs found that both long-term care and acute care settings contribute significantly to LD exposure cases. Insights from patient movement within the VA system during the exposure period can be useful for epidemiologic investigations and preventive actions.

Estimate of Burden and Direct Healthcare Cost of Infectious Waterborne Disease in the United States

Sarah A. Collier et al.

Summary: The provision of safe drinking water in the United States is an important public health achievement, but new challenges have emerged with waterborne diseases. Approximately 7.15 million waterborne illnesses occur annually in the US, with most hospitalizations and deaths caused by biofilm-associated pathogens. The total direct healthcare costs incurred from waterborne infectious diseases reach $3.33 billion annually.

Growth of Legionella during COVID-19 lockdown stagnation

William J. Rhoads et al.

Summary: Although many building water quality experts have emphasized avoiding stagnation, the foundational support for this terminology in peer-reviewed publications and building water management guidelines is not very convincing. Concerns about extended stagnation triggering increased incidence of Legionellosis have been widely discussed in the news and social media due to COVID-19 lockdowns and subsequent reopening. By presenting a perspective on four simple questions, we hope to encourage a broader dialogue and more critical assessment of assumptions and communication strategies related to stagnation and Legionella growth.
