Occurrence of E. coli and antibiotic-resistant E. coli in the southern watershed of Lake Biwa, including in wastewater treatment plant effluent and inflow rivers

Chih-Yu Ma et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a serious challenge to human, animal, and environmental health worldwide. A study in Japan found that antibiotic-resistant E. coli was prevalent in Lake Biwa and inflow rivers, with similar resistance patterns to clinical samples. The numbers of antibiotic-resistant E. coli decreased during wastewater treatment processes, but the resistance rates increased, suggesting selection for antibiotic resistance during treatment.

A catchment-scale assessment of the sanitary condition of treated wastewater and river water based on fecal indicators and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp

Liliana Serwecinska et al.

Summary: Urbanization and population growth have created significant sanitation challenges in cities and communities worldwide. This study conducted an extensive assessment of sanitary conditions of river water and treated wastewater from seventeen WWTPs along the Pilica River in central Poland, identifying potential hot spots of sanitary hazards. The presence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. bacteria in effluent wastewaters and river water samples was highlighted as a significant public health concern.

Identification, antibiotic resistance, and virulence profiling of Aeromonas and Pseudomonas species from wastewater and surface water

Reshme Govender et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of various sources of pollution on the occurrence, antibiotic resistance profile, and virulence signatures of Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. in aquatic environments. The results showed high levels of antibiotic resistance in both bacterial species and a strong association between virulence genes and antibiotic resistance. This highlights the potential health risks posed to communities through exposure to contaminated water.

Carbapenem-resistant bacteria over a wastewater treatment process: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in untreated wastewater and intrinsically-resistant bacteria in final effluent

S. Araujo et al.

Summary: Although urban wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in eliminating antibiotic resistance, they still struggle to produce effluents free of resistance. UV-C radiation significantly reduces the abundance and prevalence of carbapenem-resistant bacteria (CRB), but CRB numbers increased after incubation in the dark. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) with bla(GES-5), integrons, and plasmids were detected in samples, raising concerns about potential horizontal gene transfer within these systems. Surveillance of carbapenem resistance in UWWTPs is essential for timely mitigation measures.

Antibiotic resistance and antibiotic resistant gens of Pseudomonas spp. and Escherichia coli isolated from untreated hospital wastewater

Farzaneh Baghal Asghari et al.

Summary: This research characterized the microbial populations and resistant genes in hospital wastewater, finding high concentrations of HPC and ARB, with high resistance rates to Sulfamethoxazole and ceftazidime, and high sensitivity to gentamicin. SulCYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER BYELORUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN I and QnrS were identified as the most and least abundant ARGs, respectively, with bla(SHV) being the most prevalent beta-lactam resistant gene.
