Acclimation of Isochrysis galbana Parke (Isochrysidaceae) for enhancing its tolerance and biodegradation to high-level phenol in seawater

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Laboratory evolution was used to cultivate two microalgae strains with enhanced tolerance and biodegradation of phenol, demonstrating rapid growth and efficient removal of phenol. The elevated activity of phenol hydroxylase in the strains contributed to the enhanced biodegradation, suggesting that extending acclimation time may lead to the development of even better strains.

Summary: The rapid growth of industrial sectors has led to the discharge of large quantities of phenolic pollutants into aquatic environments, posing serious health risks to humans and other organisms. Biodegradation is a sustainable and cost-effective method for removing phenolic contaminants, but requires detailed research on microbial growth and degradation kinetics.

Microbial analysis and enrichment of anaerobic phenol and p-cresol degrading consortia with addition of AQDS

Mingmei Chi et al.

Summary: Quinones and humus are widely present in the biosphere, and play crucial roles in the anaerobic biodegradation and biotransformation of various types of compounds. The study investigated the impact of humic model compound AQDS on the degradation of phenol and p-cresol anaerobically, revealing different dominant microbial species in AQDS-free and AQDS-containing enrichments. The findings suggest that specific microbial communities are responsible for different steps in the degradation pathway of phenol to acetate.
