The endopeptidase of the maize-affecting Marafivirus type member maize rayado fino virus doubles as a deubiquitinase

Ankoor Patel et al.

Summary: Marafiviruses have the ability to cause persistent infections in various plants important to agriculture and biofuel industries. There is a lack of in-depth study on the composition and processing of polyproteins produced by these viruses, which contain essential proteins for viral replicase formation and virus assembly structural proteins. The presence of cysteine proteases within Marafiviruses' polyproteins, which may have deubiquitinating activity, has been suggested to play a role in regulating viral replication and interfering with antiviral responses.
