Ovine abortion and stillbirth investigations in Australia

T. Clune et al.

Summary: The study analyzed data from 529 investigations on ovine abortion or stillbirth in four states of Australia from 2000 to 2018. The results showed that 81% of investigations involved infectious abortion, with Campylobacter spp., Listeria spp., and Toxoplasma gondii being the most common abortigenic pathogens. Investigations that included placental tissue samples were more likely to have an aetiological diagnosis.

Neospora caninum is not an important contributor to poor reproductive performance of primiparous ewes from southern Australia: evidence from a cross-sectional study

Thomas Clune et al.

Summary: The study revealed a low seroprevalence of N. caninum in Australian breeding ewes, and exposure to the pathogen was unlikely to explain the abortion and perinatal mortalities observed in primiparous ewes.

The Effect of Vaccination with Neospora caninum Live-Frozen Tachyzoites on Abortion Rates of Naturally Infected Pregnant Cows

Monica L. Mazuz et al.

Summary: Vaccination with frozen live Neospora caninum tachyzoites was found to reduce abortion rates in naturally infected seropositive pregnant dairy dams, particularly in cows with high antibody titers. The vaccine efficacy varied among different farms, but overall, the frozen live vaccination may be an effective method to control neosporosis in cattle.

Genomic Detection of Schmallenberg Virus, Israel

Adi Behar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the genomic detection of Schmallenberg virus in Culicoides midges and affected ruminants in Israel from June 2018 to December 2019, indicating its circulation in the region. Israel, geographically bridging three continents, may serve as an epidemiologic bridge for potential spread of the Schmallenberg virus into Asia.
