Development and computational performance improvement of the wheel-rail coupling for heavy haul locomotive traction studies

Maksym Spiryagin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a specially developed wheel-rail coupling model based on the Extended Contact library, which is incorporated in a full mechatronic model of a modern heavy haul locomotive. The implementation of parallel computing technique allows for reasonable computational performance. This complex approach shows a perspective for competing with the standard approach and providing accurate results required for locomotive/track damage studies.

Detailed wheel/rail geometry processing using the planar contact approach

E. A. H. Vollebregt

Summary: This article introduces a new software module for automating the calculations of wheel/rail contact, using a new generic software foundation with a multibody formalism. The method can analyze the position and local geometry of the contact patches, and automatically form creepages. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of the approach.

Comparison of wheel-rail contact models in the context of multibody system simulation: Hertzian versus non-Hertzian

Binbin Liu et al.

Summary: This paper compares the influence of different contact models on MBS simulations of rail vehicle system dynamics, and finds that non-Hertzian models deviate from the classical Hertzian solutions in both local contact and global dynamics. The KBTNH model provides better agreement with CONTACT than the FASTSIM algorithm for non-elliptic contact conditions.
