Preeclampsia and Increased Permeability Over the Blood-Brain Barrier: A Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Receptor 2

Lina Bergman et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers used an in vitro model of the human blood-brain barrier to investigate the role of VEGFR2 in preeclampsia. They found that selective tyrosine phosphorylation of VEGFR2 may contribute to the increased BBB permeability in preeclampsia, regardless of plasma concentrations of angiogenic biomarkers.

Cognitive impairment in preeclampsia complicated by eclampsia and pulmonary edema after delivery

Lina Bergman et al.

Summary: The study found that women with preeclampsia complicated by pulmonary edema and especially eclampsia experienced impaired cognitive function after the onset of disease, compared to women with normotensive pregnancies. However, this impairment was not present before the onset of the disease. Women with preeclampsia without severe features did not show impaired cognitive function.

Signs of neuroaxonal injury in preeclampsia-A case control study

Malin Andersson et al.

Summary: This case-control study found that women with preeclampsia have increased levels of NfL in both their CSF and plasma, with a strong correlation between the two. Additionally, levels of NSE and tau were reduced in the CSF of women with preeclampsia, but no significant differences were observed in plasma levels. Serum levels of S100B were elevated in preeclampsia, while CSF levels remained consistent with those of normal pregnancy.

7T dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for the detection of subtle blood-brain barrier leakage

Lisanne P. W. Canjels et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a dual-time resolution DCE-MRI protocol at 7T, with lower contrast agent dose, to assess subtle BBB leakage. K-i and v(p) were significantly higher in gray matter than white matter, with higher K-i values observed in patients with ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack compared to controls. Additionally, the lesion in the ischemic stroke patient showed higher leakage values compared to normal tissue.

Blood-brain barrier leakage and perivascular collagen accumulation precede microvessel rarefaction and memory impairment in a chronic hypertension animal model

Esra Ozkan et al.

Summary: The study found that in chronic hypertensive rats, there was a significant decrease in pericyte coverage, blood-brain barrier breakdown, and a possible role of pericytes in increased collagen accumulation around cerebral microvasculature due to hypertension. However, at the time of evaluation, the hypertensive rats did not show cognitive decline and memory impairments.
