Validation and Optimization of Host Immunological Bio-Signatures for a Point-of-Care Test for TB Disease

Hygon Mutavhatsindi et al.

Summary: The development of a non-sputum-based, point-of-care diagnostic test for tuberculosis is a global priority. A study conducted in six African countries identified a two-marker bio-signature with a sensitivity of 94% and specificity of 69% for diagnosing TB in patients with no prior history of the disease.

Evaluation of Host Serum Protein Biomarkers of Tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa

Thomas C. Morris et al.

Summary: A study evaluated serum protein biomarkers discovered in primary care cohorts from Africa reapplied to patients from secondary care, discovering a nine-protein signature to distinguish tuberculosis from other diseases. This signature showed high sensitivity and specificity, indicating the potential for serum proteins as point-of-care screening tests for TB in African hospitals. Additionally, complement factor H was identified as a new biomarker for such signatures.

A Plasma 5-Marker Host Biosignature Identifies Tuberculosis in High and Low Endemic Countries

Bih H. Chendi et al.

Summary: Multiple host markers showed diagnostic potential for TB in both the Norwegian and South African cohorts, with a site-independent 5-marker biosignature identified as having high accuracy for diagnosing TB, regardless of geographical setting. This suggests that the 5-marker host plasma biosignature may have diagnostic potential for TB disease across different TB settings.
