In utero exposure to electronic-cigarette aerosols decreases lung fibrillar collagen content, increases Newtonian resistance and induces sex-specific molecular signatures in neonatal mice

Kerin M. Cahill et al.

Summary: Approximately 7% of pregnant women in the United States use electronic-cigarette devices during pregnancy, but there is no scientific evidence supporting its safety. In utero exposure to e-cigarette aerosols has been shown to affect lung alveologenesis and pulmonary function in neonates, inducing sex-specific molecular signatures.

The Serpin Superfamily and Their Role in the Regulation and Dysfunction of Serine Protease Activity in COPD and Other Chronic Lung Diseases

Gillian A. Kelly-Robinson et al.

Summary: COPD is a complex disease characterized by unregulated proteolytic destruction of lung tissue mediated via a protease-antiprotease imbalance. Serpins, including AAT, play a crucial role in regulating protease activity in the lungs and understanding their physiological/pathological role could lead to new therapeutic opportunities for COPD and other chronic lung diseases.

Patterns of combustible and electronic cigarette use during pregnancy and associated pregnancy outcomes

Annette K. Regan et al.

Summary: This study found that using e-cigarettes prior to pregnancy was not associated with smoking combustible cigarettes during pregnancy, but using e-cigarettes during pregnancy was associated with a higher prevalence of smoking combustible cigarettes. There was no evidence to support reduced risk of adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth, small-for-gestational age, and low birth weight compared to smoking combustible cigarettes during pregnancy, suggesting that e-cigarettes should not be considered a safe alternative during pregnancy.
