Green analytical chemistry metrics: A review

Muhammad Sajid et al.

Summary: Green analytical chemistry promotes environmentally friendly practices such as reducing the use of toxic chemicals, energy-efficient equipment, and minimizing waste generation. Various metrics have been developed to evaluate the greenness of analytical procedures, with tools like Analytical Eco-Scale and Green Analytical Procedure Index playing important roles in assessing the environmental impact of analytical processes. This paper explores the principles and applications of these greenness evaluation metrics, highlighting both their advantages and limitations in promoting sustainable analytical practices.

Metal-organic framework-based sorbents in analytical sample preparation

Maryam Bazargan et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as an important material class in analytical applications due to their unique properties. The current limitation of MOFs in separation field lies in their chemical and thermal stabilities, which can be enhanced by ligand modification or cooperative combination with other materials. The role and applications of MOFs as sorbents in sample preparation have been widely studied, offering new solutions for future analytical sample preparation problems.

Polyamide-coated wooden tips coupled to direct infusion mass spectrometry, a high throughput alternative for the determination of methadone, cocaine and methamphetamine in oral fluid

Jaime Millan-Santiago et al.

Summary: The use of natural materials such as wooden tips with a porous structure coated with nylon 6 is proposed for the extraction of drugs of abuse from oral fluid samples. This method allows for simultaneous extraction of multiple samples and provides high sample throughput with detection limits of 1.5 μg L-1 for methamphetamine. Precision values were better than 9.1%, 12.6%, and 18.2% for methadone, cocaine, and methamphetamine respectively, with an accuracy range from 86% to 103%.

Alternative and sustainable solvents for green analytical chemistry

Ombeline Claux et al.

Summary: Analytical chemistry heavily relies on solvents, usually petroleum-based, with hazardous effects. The ideal alternative solvents for analysis should have high selectivity, solvency, low toxicity, low environmental impacts, be easily biodegradable and obtained from renewable resources at a reasonable price. However, finding a solvent that meets all these requirements is a challenge, as the optimum solvent selection depends on various factors such as extraction procedure, analytical method, matrix, and target molecules. This opinion presents a snapshot of current knowledge on alternative and sustainable solvents in analytical laboratories, focusing on innovation and development of safe products and procedures.
