Age-determined expression of priming protease TMPRSS2 and localization of SARS-CoV-2 in lung epithelium

Bryce A. Schuler et al.

Summary: The study found that SARS-CoV-2 primarily infects ciliated cells and type I alveolar epithelial cells in the lungs, with TMPRSS2 expression increasing with age. Analysis of autopsy tissue showed that SARS-CoV-2 RNA is mainly located in specific cells in the respiratory tract and peripheral lung that express TMPRSS2.
