Long-term exposure to air-pollution and COVID-19 mortality in England: A hierarchical spatial analysis

Garyfallos Konstantinoudis et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a potential link between long-term exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 and an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality. After adjusting for confounding and spatial autocorrelation, there was a 0.5% increase in COVID-19 mortality risk for every 1 μg/m(3) increase in NO2 and a 1.4% increase for PM2.5. The spatial relative risk at LSOA level revealed strong patterns, which may reflect the spread of the disease during the initial wave of the epidemic.
