Lightweight hybrid materials and structures for energy absorption: A state-of-the-art review and outlook

Guangyong Sun et al.

Summary: This article provides a critical review on the advances in hybrid materials and structures for crashworthiness and energy absorption performance. It discusses the hybridization of different materials to maximize their functional roles in lightweight structures. The evaluation and comparison of various hybridized materials in terms of crashworthiness and energy absorption are also discussed.

On failure mechanisms in CFRP/Al adhesive joints after hygrothermal aging degradation following by mechanical tests

Gang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mechanisms of CFRP/Aluminum adhesive joints after hygrothermal degradation, revealing a decrease in strength after aging but a noticeable increase after 40 days. Different failure processes and modes were observed, with a total of three different types of failure modes identified, including two uncommon ones. The residual mechanical properties of the adhesive material were affected by water plasticization and temperature post-curing, with moisture absorption characteristics impacting the residual mechanical properties.

On multiaxial failure behavior of closed-cell aluminum foams under medium strain rates

Erdong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic failure behavior of closed-cell aluminium foams under different strain rates. It reveals that the uniaxial failure strength's hardening is rate-dependent on the foam cell-wall base material at low and medium strain rates. The failure surface in the von Mises mean stress plane significantly expands with increasing strain rates, but is almost independent of loading or strain rates when normalized by the uniaxial failure strength at the corresponding strain rates. The study suggests modified rate-dependent constitutive models for foam materials under quasi-static and dynamic loadings.

Ultra-high three-point bending fatigue performance of nano-silica-reinforced CFRP

Junliang Ding et al.

Summary: The addition of silica nano-particles significantly extended the fatigue life of CFRP by enhancing the connection strength between polymer and carbon fiber, and by passivating and even blocking the growth of fatigue cracks. The fatigue damage morphologies of the nano-particles modified CFRP were closely related to stress magnitude, and stiffness degradation exhibited staged change characteristics with the evolution of damage morphologies.

On quasi-static behaviors of different joint methods for connecting carbon fiber reinforce plastic (CFRP) laminate and aluminum alloy

Guangyong Sun et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated mechanical behaviors and failure mechanisms of different joint methods for dissimilar materials. The results indicated that the hybrid connection exhibited the best mechanical characteristics among the three types of joints, with an interactive enhancement effect between the rivet and adhesive. Filling adhesive in a preformed hole of the substrate can effectively disperse stress and reduce stress concentration.
