Gas-pressurized torrefaction of biomass wastes: The optimization of pressurization condition and the pyrolysis of torrefied biomass

Yiming Sun et al.

Summary: The novel gas-pressurized (GP) torrefaction process showed improved properties of biomass pyrolysis products with an optimal operating pressure of 1.7 MPa. Compared to conventional torrefaction, GP torrefaction reduced acid content in bio-oil and increased the calorific value of biogas.

Bio-FLASHCHAIN® theory for rapid devolatilization of biomass. 4. V.2.0 decomposition mechanism for mineral-free cellulose

Stephen Niksa

Summary: The essential aspects of cellulose devolatilization involve depolymerization reactions, bond rupture probabilities, charring cascade, and Flash Distillation Analogy. Predictions from cel-FC accurately depict the impacts of temperature, heating rate, and pressure on the major products of primary cellulose devolatilization, explaining the variations in oil yields and molecular weight distributions under different conditions.

Regulation of the elemental distribution in biomass by the torrefaction pretreatment using different atmospheres and its influence on the subsequent pyrolysis behaviors

Ruixia Li et al.

Summary: Different torrefaction atmospheres were used to pretreat biomass, resulting in variations in element distribution such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen content. The type of atmosphere affected the subsequent pyrolysis behaviors, with NH3 atmosphere showing distinctive characteristics due to Maillard reactions and nitrogen incorporation.

An assessment of biomass torrefaction severity indexes

Edgar A. Silveira et al.

Summary: This study evaluated five indexes commonly used in torrefaction research and found that the three yield property-based indexes were more effective in predicting torrefied product properties and energy performance parameters, while the two operating condition-based indexes were more effective in analyzing solid product properties.

Torrefaction of corn straw in oxygen and carbon dioxide containing gases: Mass/energy yields and evolution of gaseous species

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Pulverized corn straw biomass was torrefied in carrier gases containing oxygen and carbon dioxide, with the proportions of 3-7% O2, 13-17% CO2, and 80% N2. The mass and energy yields of the biomass decreased with increasing temperature and oxygen concentration during oxidative torrefaction. Chlorine and sulfur contents of the biomass were released to the gas phase, with amounts increasing as temperature and oxygen concentration increased. Temperature had a pronounced effect on mass and energy yields and the evolution of elements to the gas phase.

The morphology evolution of char particles during conversion processes

Cong B. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of particle morphology during the char conversion process through particle-resolved transient CFD calculations, discussing in detail the complex physical and chemical processes under different process conditions and reaction regimes. The theoretical correlation between char diameter and char density exponent was confirmed, and new expressions for alpha and beta exponents were discovered. The Random Pore Model was extended to include an empirical correlation gamma for different reaction regimes and operating conditions.

Impact of torrefaction on entrained-flow gasification of pine sawdust: An experimental investigation

Lei Liao et al.

Summary: The study showed that torrefaction pretreatment can improve the gasification performance of pine sawdust and reduce soot yield. The carbon deposits during gasification are closely related to the volatile matter content in feedstocks.

Mathematical modeling of the thermochemical processes of nitrogen oxides sequestration during combustion of wood-coal mixture particles

G. V. Kuznetsov et al.

Summary: The article presents a mathematical modeling of the combustion process of biomass/coal mixtures in the combustion chambers of thermal power plant boilers. The authors developed a new hypothesis about the sequestration of anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx) during fuel combustion. Numerical modeling shows the potential for significant reduction in nitrogen oxides yield through co-combustion of coal and wood particles.
