A fatigue life prediction method distinguishing fracture modes for Ni-based single crystal superalloys considering porosity defect

Wen Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, nine porosity-related fatigue damage parameters were selected for evaluation using a crystal plastic finite element model, revealing that the geometric mean of stress-strain concentration factor was a satisfactory parameter for quantifying the impact of porosity defects on fatigue. Additionally, a method for predicting fatigue life and distinguishing fracture modes based on resolved stress-strain concentration factor was proposed, yielding improved results compared to traditional parameters.

The effect of porosity size on the high cycle fatigue life of nickel-based single crystal superalloy at 980?C

Wen Jiang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the key factor affecting the high-cycle fatigue life of nickel-based single crystal superalloys is the size of pore defects, while the oxide layer could also act as initiation site for secondary cracks. A prediction model based on the critical plane was used to quantitatively evaluate the effect of pure porosity size on the material performance, showing effectiveness and applicability in engineering applications.

Transition from internal to surface crack initiation of a single-crystal superalloy in the very-high-cycle fatigue regime at 1100 °C

Z. Zhao et al.

Summary: The transition from internal to surface crack initiation in the very-high-cycle fatigue regime is controlled by oxidation assisted fatigue-crack process. At 1100 degrees C, multiple surface crack initiation sites appear as a result of internal oxide penetration, with the fatal crack following Mode I propagation. Surrounding the oxidized and cracked regions, gamma'-phase depletion occurs while localized rafting can occur near the crack tip.
