The role of local topography and sea surface temperature on summer monsoon precipitation over Bangladesh and northeast India

Abdullah A. Fahad et al.

Summary: Bangladesh receives most of its precipitation from the Asian summer monsoon system, influenced by the surrounding topography and sea surface temperature. Moisture convergence near mountains and moisture source from the Bay of Bengal contribute to the precipitation in Bangladesh. Intensified low-level jet transporting moisture inland due to land-sea thermal contrast during summer plays a key role.

A statistical analysis on the contribution of El Nino-Southern Oscillation to the rainfall and temperature over Bangladesh

Md Wahiduzzaman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to rainfall and temperature in Bangladesh using data from 1958 to 2017. The results showed that ENSO has a strong connection with rainfall and temperature variations across seasons in Bangladesh. Various statistical methods were employed to analyze the impact of different types of ENSO on the climate of Bangladesh.

How air quality and COVID-19 transmission change under different lockdown scenarios? A case from Dhaka city, Bangladesh

Md Siddiqur Rahman et al.

Summary: The study found that implementing a lockdown policy in Dhaka city can reduce the transmission of COVID-19 and also decrease air pollution. Various models explored the relationship between air quality indicators and COVID-19 transmission, revealing a potential decrease in COVID-19 infection rate with long-term exposure to O-3 and CO.

Effects of cyclic variability in Pacific decadal oscillation on winter wheat production in China

Yifei Xu et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant effect of the PDO interdecadal variation on winter wheat yields in China, with yields increasing during positive PDO phases and decreasing during negative phases. The interdecadal variation in winter wheat production is mainly influenced by April precipitation and December temperature, modulated by the PDO phase change.

Intense Precipitation Events during the Monsoon Season in Bangladesh as Captured by Satellite-Based Products

Carlo Montes et al.

Summary: Extreme precipitation events pose a serious threat to societal well-being in rainy areas like Bangladesh. This study focused on the analysis of four satellite-based precipitation products for monitoring intense rainfall events, revealing systematic underestimation or overestimation of precipitation associated with intense rainfall events across the country. While random errors were higher in certain regions, biases were more homogeneous, and IMERG showed the best performance in representing climatological intensity indices.

Development of novel hybrid machine learning models for monthly thunderstorm frequency prediction over Bangladesh

Md. Abul Kalam Azad et al.

Summary: This study proposed two novel hybrid machine learning models by hybridizing empirical ensemble mode decomposition (EEMD) with artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) for thunderstorm frequency (TSF) prediction in Bangladesh. The hybrid models showed higher prediction precision compared to conventional models in different categories, suggesting the potential for improving prediction accuracy. The hybrid models developed in this study have the ability to be applied for TSF prediction in Bangladesh and other parts of the world.

Spatiotemporal characteristics and attribution of dry/wet conditions in the Weihe River Basin within a typical monsoon transition zone of East Asia over the recent 547 years

Xinyu Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the Weihe River Basin can be divided into four distinct hydroclimatic subregions located in the southeast, west, central, and north. The East Asian summer monsoon and South Asian summer monsoon mainly impact this region on the inter-annual and inter-decadal scales, while the effects of ENSO, PDO, AO, and NAO are dominant on the multi-decadal and centennial scales.

Spatiotemporal nexus between vegetation change and extreme climatic indices and their possible causes of change

Abu Reza Md Towfiqul Islam et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between Bangladesh's vegetation and extreme rainfall, a significant negative correlation between warm temperature indices and seasonal NDVI, and a positive correlation between precipitation and cold temperature extremes with annual NDVI. Temperature extremes are projected to increase in the future, while precipitation extremes remain unchanged. NDVI is significantly associated with extreme temperature indices with a one-month time lag and with precipitation extremes without a time lag.
